Are there any websites that support non-medication treatments for ADHD in children?

I have read many articles about about certain treatments that can work effectively but how do I find some details? We are changing my son’s diet and sticking with a more structured routine at home. We are also getting him involved in some activities such as swimming lessons now and t-ball in the summer. I am looking for a website, group, blog, anything that can offer support on my decision to not use medication.

I can’t help with website. but I can offer my 2 cents. As grandmother. My grandson age 10 has it. They put him on meds. he licks his chin as side effect. It’s pitiful It’s always chapped and scabbed.I think he is on too much meds. No one asked me though. you know this is got to affect his pride and self esteem with other children.

I’m far from an expert on this subject, but I’ve wondered if the symptoms of ADD, ADHD are triggered by the constant flashing of electronic screens, such as TV, monitors, and the LAYERED noise the we constantly live with. I have noticed in myself that I am calmer now that I’ve steered away from tv and it’s 1-2 second images and the layered noise. My brain couldn’t handle the flashing and the noise and I would get agitated. I found other ways such at mute and looking away from the screen when they go into commercial or other scenes that flash and crash and bang and thump and in and out up and down, woo it makes me crazy. Just amagine what a childs brain is trying to deal with. I don’t remember ADD and these symptoms in children I played with as a child.
that’s my opinion and i’m sticking to it.

one more thing, do your own holistic experimenting and ask son what works for HIM. It may take a while but he’s worth it.

ADHD is best treated using a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. It depends on the type of ADHD that your child has and if he is displaying signs of hyperactivity or not. Diet and structure at home will certainly help and natural remedies are available.

You can consider herbal an natural remedies such as Kava Kava as a relaxation and anti-anxiety agent or also try meditative activities. The blog below had some goo info and a book about Natural ADHD treatment.

I have had ADHD my entire life and after resisting medication for over 10 years have now had significant improvement with a very low dose stimulant coupled with therapy. Truly, good luck in your quest. No treatment works 100% for anyone but I hope you find one for your son natural or otherwise.

    Hi wetmore2002

There is a lot of information about non-medication approaches to ADHD. For instance, you can check out my response to another question here on Yahoo Answers:

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I just did an interview with a CogMed Working Memory coach that is available on my blog at http://www.thetruthbehindadhd.com/working-memory-training

I wish I could point you in the direction of one or two very focused resources online that are non-medication based…but I just don’t know of that many. Have you tried searching Google for "ADHD Blogs" or ADHD Blog Alternatives. With the exception of sending you to my website (which would be biased), your best bet will be to do a very focused search on what you are looking for. Just be careful to check the source of information. There are a lot of people talking about ADHD.

I hope you find this information useful, and if I can be of further assistance, please feel free to get in touch with me.

PS – Medication can certainly help, but not everyone uses it or needs it. Just consult with a Dr. and make sure you follow what matches your beliefs and views…
