Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a mental condition found in some children all over the world. A child with ADHD can be hyperactive, totally inattentive and impulsive at times. However, to label every child who demonstrates the above traits as with ADHD is highly inaccurate.

Children being children will be hyperactive, impulsive at times in some situations. A child may also seem to be inattentive, it could be because, and he doesn’t want to pay attention. A look at the ADHD statistical data will convey an alarming trend; however, assumption is also a large contributor to this figure. To be fair, let us not put a child in ADHD care just out of a need to control the child.

ADHD is a disease that starts right from the childhood. It usually changes how a child behaves, think, and feel. The ADHD children are generally very restless. Nearly all children suffering from this disease are overactive and lacking concentration at times.

The children have poor concentration in their study have a weak memory, impulsiveness athey are in a hurry to do everything, generally lack self prestige Weak short term memory and they suffer from some abnormal sleep and appetite problems.

Diagnosis & treatment

Left untreated, ADHD can adversely affect the wellbeing and development of a child and his or her family. Childhood, being the platform on which rest of the life is built, a child with untreated ADHD could have behavioral problems carried into adulthood.

Such a child could also be emotionally weak, besides being a laggard in studies

ADHD is diagnosed during primary school years.Symptons may be seen by the age of six .It is not easy to diagnose this condition as the symptoms might overlap the natural behaviour of a child. However, as mentioned above, the most telltale leads are Hyperactivity, consistent impulsive actions, and disruptive and un attentiveness.

While the causes of ADHD are still being understood, a genetic element may also be involved. There are different therapies, rather than treatments for ADHD. It must be mentioned here that an ADHD child is not completely abnormal all the time, does behave as a normal play child but can have bouts of such extreme behaviour.

Treatment of ADHD is in accordance with the type of behaviour predominantly displayed.Treatment includes psychosocial and educational programmes as well as medication, in some cases. It would be very useful to seek help of teachers to understand the child’s condition better and arrive at better diagnosis.

More than the treatment, a child with ADHD needs support, understanding and love and thanks to the various awareness programs for parents and teachers, the ADHD child can also look forward to being a national asset.

It is said that children are closest to God. Thus children suffering from diseases like Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD) are all the more special. They are God’s special children and have a different destiny carved for them. They are different from the normal children in a lot of ways.

Children suffering from ADD/ ADHD show the following symptoms:

1.Children suffering from ADD/ ADHD have very low attention spans.

2.They cannot pay attention at a particular thing for a long time.

3.They suffer from hyperactivity problem.

4.They find it extremely difficult to complete any given tasks.

5.They can be easily distracted.

6.They can land up in unwanted troubles as they can undertake activities which may involve high risks.

7.They can do things without thinking too much about the after- effects.

8.Such children may be over-interfering.

9.Such children can be forgetful and lose their things.

10.They can be very talkative.

11.They show signs of restlessness.

Children suffering from ADHD show the above mentioned disorders. However they can be very intelligent with great skills and talent. Thus can showcase their talent in various fields ranging from academics to sports to art, craft and cultural activities. They can be extremely creative and bright young minds.

To distinguish between normal and ADHD children:

Thus with the above mentioned aspects that ADHD children portray, it can be a challenge to distinguish between normal children and children suffering from ADHD. However children suffering from ADHD show the above mentioned symptoms on a much more regular basis than the normal children who show these signs on a very irregular basis.

Children suffering from ADHD show such symptoms with a higher degree and with a higher severity. Normal children show these signs but are less severe in nature.ADHD children show these signs in all the situations which is not the case among normal children.

Role of Parents and Teachers:

The first step to be considered, especially, by parents is careful and proper evaluation of the child suffering fro ADHD. They must refer to a good and professional trainer. Proper evaluation can be done through various IQ tests and other psychological tests. Parents and teachers must extend strong and unconditional support to such children and help them overcome this disease to the greatest extent.

Conclusion:

Children suffering from ADHD are not very different from the normal ones. With proper guidance, support and encouragement they too can lead a normal life similar to the one led by the normal children. After all ADHD children too are gifted!

Is this the sort of help with ADHD children you, as a parent, are looking for? At the James Madison University, students were interviewed about their misuse of the ADHD drugs like Adderall to help them study for exams. Overall anything between 5 % and 35% of students are snorting this drug or similar ones to get through their exams. They seem to be ignorant of other possible side effects such as: anxiety, hypertension, hallucinations, insomnia, weight loss, sudden death and seizures. They seem to be unaware that Adderall is a Schedule II drug and they could get up to 40 years of imprisonment under Virginia drug law. Fines of up to $500,000 could be imposed as well. Is this the treatment of ADHD in children you wanted?

Is this the future you see for your child when s/he gets to university? Here is another story of a boy in the UK who had severe ADHD and was on a very high dose (70 mg) of Concerta. Normally a 50mg dose is the maximum dose. Because of the side effects of this ADHD drug supposed to calm hyperactivity and control impulsivity, this boy injured himself while trying to iron a shirt which he was wearing at the time. One of the side effects of the drug was a terrible feeling of depression and listlessness. The 18 year old stopped taking the medication and one of his reactions was to go and burn down a school. He was convicted of arson and ordered to pay damages. Is this the sort of treatment of ADHD in children you were looking for?

When parents ask about treatment of ADHD in children, they do not want to hear these stories and many will shrug their shoulders saying that these are calculated risks. Other parents will run a mile from these ADHD medications which are a cocktail of amphetamines and they know that they are addictive and can lead to drug abuse. They also know that these psychostimulants are in great demand on the school parking lot. Up to 20% of teenagers who have been on these ADHD drugs are at risk of drug dependency and ending up on the drugs scene and even as pushers. Is this the only help with ADHD children we are offered by the drugs industry?

Many parents have read extensively on ADHD and know that , in spite of the drugs industry’s best efforts, there ARE alternative ADHD therapies available and they consist of herbal/homeopathic remedies which are just as effective and without any of the side effects or problems I have mentioned above. Each parent has to make an informed choice and the one thing that will influence them is the fact that ADHD drugs only suppress the symptoms and never cure the cause. Actually there is no cure but the natural remedies for ADHD will alleviate the symptoms and will not turn your child into a zombie , arsonist or drug pusher. This is the treatment of ADHD in children which will never get much publicity. The link here will give you all the information you need.

Sometimes I have to rub my eyes in disbelief when I read about ADHD on the Internet or in books or listen to TV shows. The latest is that children (babies) as young as 18 months are on Ritalin! Why are we doing this when there is a natural treatment of ADHD in children which is perfectly safe and non addictive?

Ask the head of the Bavarian police in Germany what he thinks about Ritalin. They did a study which shows that there is a definite established link between Ritalin and drug abuse. He called Ritalin the door opener to substance abuse. Ritalin (an amphetamine) is highly addictive and the drugs industry are not going to labour the point, are they? Why hasn\’t somebody thought of ADHD natural supplements? They have, but lots of people who have more than a vested interest (doctors, teachers and even parents) are not going to tell you about them.

The tragedy of so many ruined lives. Think about children who have been on ADHD medications for years and now are in their twenties and are still on them. Think of teenagers at school who are approached by other children when they know they are on an ADHD drug because they want to buy them! The favourite drugs on college campuses are ADHD meds- Adderall, Ritalin and Concerta sell very well. Why? Because nobody wanted to rock the boat too much and after all, the ADHD medication with psychostimulants is a multi million dollar business. A natural treatment of ADHD in children is just as effective but they are not backed by Big Pharm.

There are thousands of parents who fortunately have chosen a wiser safer option – a natural treatment of ADHD in children. These homeopathic remedies help the child to concentrate and focus much better than before. This medicine takes a holistic approach and treats the child rather than his condition. Hyperactivity, excitability and temper outbursts are controlled or even eliminated , much to the relief of parents. The three most important ingredients are: Hyoscyamus, Arsen iod and Tuberculinum. They soothe the nervous system and calm the child. The medicines are easy to take too.

Natural treatment of ADHD in children fits perfectly with behaviour therapy, parenting skills and school support which are the other elements in this rather complicated equation. There is absolutely no need to drug the nation\’s youth with ADHD psychostimulants when a natural treatment of ADHD in children is easily available and so much cheaper and safer!

ADD is short for Attention Deficit Disorder which is a behavioral developmental disorder. This disorder affects both children and adults, but is more commonly diagnosed in children. It is important to treat the condition, while still at a nascent stage in childhood, since it can cause problems if it is undiagnosed and left untreated in the long run. While adults are able to cope better with the disorder, coping with ADD in children can be very difficult for both parents and the child.

Symptoms in children

A child affected with ADD will have difficulty in concentrating or focusing on something. He will also find it difficult to organize things or follow instructions and directions. They have difficulty in controlling their natural spontaneous responses such as speech, movements, and attentiveness. They are unable to finish tasks, make plans, participate in activities around them or even sit still. They have a tendency to get distracted by the smallest of things and consistently make small careless mistakes in their activities that require patience and following instructions.

These children have lots of things simultaneously going on in their mind and are unable to concentrate on anything specific. Multiple activities like the teacher talking, two students whispering, and people walking on the corridor outside the classroom, all affect the ADD affected child’s concentration. While most children are able to block the other noises and concentrate on the teacher’s voice, the ADD affected child is unable to do so. They also have a tendency of losing their belongings and even very intelligent and bright children with this disorder may be getting low grades.

Symptoms in adults

ADD is also quite common among adults though in most cases it goes undiagnosed as the symptoms overlap with other adult disorders such as stress. Adults suffering from ADD are mostly restless and are unable to concentrate on their work. They also have difficulty staying organized and may even have difficulties in maintaining their relationships due to their compulsive behavior. However adults are much more equipped to deal with their problem and are mostly recommended to control their symptoms with proper diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes.

The other symptoms which are reflected both in children and adults affected with ADD are short attention spans, poor listening skills, tendency to be bored and being impulsive in speech and action. These symptoms are however noticed in various degrees in the patient and only a trained medical professional can diagnose how serious the problem is and treat it accordingly.

A quiet revolution has been taking place recently! It seems that medical authorities, experts or gurus or whatever you like to call them, are waking up and actually telling parents that ADHD meds are just not sufficient and that behavior modification therapy or other psychological interventions are necessary alongside with the medicines. This is an opening towards a much broader and more enlightened view of ADHD which will eventually include alternative treatments for children with ADHD.

What are the alternative treatments for children with ADHD available now? Apart from behavioral therapies which now must be used in any treatment for ADHD, there is a wide range to choose from. dietary programs, EEG biofeedback, herbal remedies and homeopathic remedies.

The ADHD alternative medications which I think are the most useful are combining a homeopathic remedy with ADHD behavioral therapy. The amount of time that parents waste in trying to establish the correct dose of the mind altering drugs they are stuffing down their kids is incredible. They then have to worry about the child’s appetite, sleep problems, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, monitoring of heart problems. In many cases, their children may have few or none of these side effects but the risks in the long term are significant and have been deliberately played down by Big Pharm. That is why a homeopathic remedy for ADHD saves so much time and worry as it is the safest of the ADHD alternative medications out there. There are no side effects and there are no risks either. How do we know there are no risks? Simply because the drug companies know that and if there were, they would have financed all the studies on those to discredit the homeopathic cures. In many ways it is a simple choice and it also costs a lot less. That makes it, in my opinion, one of the most effective alternative treatments for children with ADHD.

Maybe you know parents who are prisoners in their own homes? Maybe you yourself are subject to violent, aggressive behaviour on the part of your kids. There may be problems with defiance, disobedience, outbursts and abuse of siblings. I know other families though who refused to have their lives ruined and who opted for a behavioral therapy program. In using this program they learnt how to set up rewards and consequences, set up a behavior plan that both children and parents sign up to and a host of other techniques which saved their families from ruin. I would not even define ADHD behavior therapy as one of the alternative treatments for children with ADHD. I would simply say that it is an essential element in any ADHD treatment program and the all the medical gurus from the FDA to the American Academy of Pediatrics now agree with me!

Most doctors, when they encounter a case of ADHD, turn to stimulant or anti-depressant drugs to counteract most of the disorders symptoms. However, in taking these drugs the effects are short lived and the medication needs to be constant. There is also the possibility of various side effects to contend with too. Because of this, it is only natural that parents try to find alternatives. Most parents are attracted by natural alternatives ADHD children can take as opposed to prescribed drugs mainly because they are considered to have less side effects. Here are some natural alternatives for ADHD that have shown promise:

1) Caffeine – Caffeine is a stimulant, just like the prescription drugs are. This means that caffeine perks up a person who is feeling a bit drowsy. It is ironic that stimulants seem to have a reverse effect on people with ADHD. People who have used caffeine as a natural alternative to ADHD report being able to calm down and think clearly and yet have no trouble with hyperactivity.

Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, soda and some chewing gums. However, with everything moderation is key. Children should be okay to have 2.5mg of caffeine for every kilo they weigh a day. Just like stimulant drugs, this treatment is not for everyone and be aware of the sugars and other ingredients in soda that can have detrimental effects on health.

2) DMAE – This is a compound that occurs naturally in the body and in some fish. Making use of DMAE as a natural alternative or complement to ADHD prescription medicines has been shown to be effective. Studies carried out in the 1970’s looking at the effects of DMAE on people with ADHD showed results that where comparable to taking Ritalin. You will find DMAE supplements available, however there is a risk of some side effects, notably headaches, insomnia, depression, irritability and restlessness. So it pays to be careful with dosages.

3) Essential Fatty Acids – These are also found in fish and some plants. Essential fatty acids have been linked with improved mental capability and even cardiac health. Essential fatty acids can be obtained by eating deep-sea fish regularly. However, you should be careful because deep-sea fish can also have high levels of mercury in their meat. An option you can consider is cod liver oil and other fish oil supplements, although be sure the source of the fish is stated and that its mercury free. Fish oils have long been marketed as a great supplement for improving focus before people thought of using it as a natural alternative to ADHD medication.

4) B vitamins – Research shows that treatment with the B-group vitamins, especially Vitamin B6 & B12, helps a child with ADHD remain focused. There are a lot of food sources of this vitamin. However, you should keep in mind that you may not get enough of these vitamins from food alone and so taking a B-complex supplement can help.

The natural alternative ADHD sufferers can make can make a difference to ADHD behaviors. However, it may take some experimentation to find the ones that are most suitable. Discussing these options with your doctor is essential before starting on any new regime and never stop taking prescription medication without first seeking medical approval.

Use these helpful tips to create a calm home environment for your children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).

* Pay attention to room colors. Paint rooms in soothing colors such as light blue and beige. Avoid bright, loud colors. Keep distracting patterns, posters, artwork and decorations to a minimum.

* Organize. Children who suffer from ADD/ADHD do not function well in a cluttered or unpredictable environment. Maintain a consistent homework schedule, keep school materials in the same place, take out school clothes and have them ready for the next morning.

* Try covering televisions and computer screens if they are distracting your child. Turn off distracting background music or television shows.

* Follow a routine with respect to wake up times, meal times, doing homework, and bed times. Try to schedule these activities at the same time each day. Changes in routine can agitate a child with ADD/ADHD. If there is an upcoming change in routine, inform your child and discuss ways for them to calmly manage the change.

* Designate a room or space in the house for relaxation or quiet time. Make sure it is away from high traffic or high activity areas. Fill this space with quiet activities such as reading books, coloring books, paints, jewelry making supplies, etc.

* Encourage your child to go to this quiet space when they become agitated or bored. It should be considered a positive relaxation space, not a punishment.

* If your child is old enough to write or enjoys writing, journaling is an excellent way to help focus disorganized minds and also provides a good outlet for feelings.
