Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the newest name that has been given to a group of disorders of the central nervous system. With the long list of names this disorder has been given over the years, it is often confusing as to which criteria are for a diagnosis of ADHD or ADD. It is estimated that between 3 and 5 percent of children in the United States have ADHD, meaning that at least one child in a classroom of twenty-five to thirty children will have ADHD. There are three times as many boys diagnosed with ADHD, but the condition is increasingly being diagnosed in girls as well.

Although ADHD was primarily thought of as a childhood disorder, it can be found in adults as well. Experts have estimated that as many as 8 million adults may be affected, but 80 percent of them do not realize it. Some studies show that there is significant decline in ADHD symptoms as a person ages, while others estimate that between 30 and 70 percent of children with ADHD will carry some symptoms into adulthood. ADHD is a more complex disorder in adults, but it manifests itself into a problem with self-regulation. Without this self-control, an adult’s ability to do tasks is impaired. This condition can lead to marital conflicts, substance abuse, and financial problems. Infidelity is common because ADHD adults easily become bored with things, including spouses.

Factors that have been linked to the development of ADHD include heredity, anxiety, allergies, smoking during pregnancy, hyperinsulinemia, oxygen deprivation at birth, environmental stress or pollutants, artificial food additives, injury, infection, lead poisoning, and prenatal trauma. More emphasis has been placed on the role of diet in ADHD in recent years. Many people with these conditions react to certain preservatives, dyes, and salicylates in foods. These problems can cause the balance of chemistry in the brain to be thrown off, which produces undesirable changes in behavior. A low-protein diet may also be a contributing factor. Although a hotly debated topic for decades, studies have definitely shown that food additives do play a major role in hyperactivity.

Many researchers feel that ADHD is being over-diagnosed nowadays. It is difficult to accurately diagnose this condition because many of the symptoms appear in the normal, healthy children at many times during childhood. In fact, more than 60 percent of parents suspect that their child has ADHD at some point in their upbringing. What may merely be creativity or a high energy level can be diagnosed as ADHD. When we think of ADHD children we usually think that they are a ‘problem’! I remember one counsellor telling parents to enjoy their ADHD children and tell them every day how they value them. They can be funny , creative and intelligent. Children with ADHD are sometimes extremely talented and the number of actors and sportspersons who have had this disorder are too numerous to mention, but they have led happy and successful lives.

It is very often the parents of ADHD children who are the problem although I am sure they do not intend that to be the case. First problem is the actual diagnosis of ADHD children. Very often, this is left to chance in that they will seek a diagnosis from a doctor who has not had much experience with the disorder. Parents need to talk to other parents and find out which doctors in their areas are ADHD specialists. It can make an enormous difference.

Many doctors are just not interested and will not take time out to TALK and explain things to the parents – indeed, many have been accused of acting like a vet with their pet cat ! This may simply be because they are not wised up on ADHD. Your child’s teacher can help though in recommending a doctor – she knows the kids in her class who are responding to treatment.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder known as ADHD is a condition in which adults or children of early age suffer due to inattention or excessive hyperactivity. Omega 3 fatty acids are now being recognized as important dietary nutrients that can not be manufactured by the body, and must be obtained by eating food sources that are high in their content. Because of their relative scarceness in the typical western diet many children, and adults, are severely deficient in omega-3 nutrition.


For children, from the moment of conception until birth and continuing on until age two, it is absolutely vital that they receive sufficient amounts of this fatty acid for healthy brain formation. Beyond the age of two it continues to be one of the main nutrients needed for healthy functioning of the brain at any age.


Omega 3s direct connection to healthy brain formation, performance, and functioning is continually being supported by an ongoing, and growing, body of scientific evidence to prove this theory rather quickly. When comparing children who have ADD or ADHD to those who do not, children that have these learning disabilities have much lower blood levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Flax seed contains the master key omega-3 substance called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is the plant form of the omega 3s of which fish eat, and unlocks the synthesis of DHA. And, while the conversion rate from ALA to DHA is quite low, ALA may have benefits in improving behavioral symptoms of these disorders that we do not fully understand yet.


The synthesis of omega 3s are also competitively slowed within the body by the over consumption of omega 6s, which are found, in over abundance, in the typical modern diet.


In conclusion, omega 3s for the treatment of ADD or ADHD symptoms would have a better chance of succeeding if one would drastically lower their omega-6 consumption of vegetable seed oils, hydrogenated or not, like canola, sunflower, safflower, and soybean which is abundant in most all popular brands of processed foods.


Along with a diet lower in processed foods, increasing your child’s fresh fruit and vegetable intakes of whole plant foods could be a boost their brain may need also. ADHD is a common behavioural disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children. ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, too much sugar, or vaccines. It is diagnosed approximately three times more often in boys than in girls. ADHD is often called “the benevolent diagnosis.” There is strong evidence to support the fact that it is very likely caused by biological factors which influence neurotransmitter activity in certain parts of the brain, and which have a strong genetic basis. The condition is characterized by poor concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsiveness.

Symptoms of ADHD- Identifying Hyperactive Kids

Symptoms include excessive worry, fear, or panic, which can also lead to physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, stomach pains, and diarrhoea. Symptoms of inattention are: often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities, often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly ,often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace. Other symptoms include difficulty in organizing tasks and activities and often loses things necessary for tasks or activities. Impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity can also be present and seem to be inheritable. These latter symptoms must be severe enough to cause impairment in the daily functioning of the person in at least two settings: at home, in school, in the community or in the workplace. Symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression may produce behavioural disturbances resembling ADHD. The good news is, with proper treatment, children with ADHD can learn to successfully live with and manage their symptoms.

How To Live With ADHD

Treatment strategies such as rewarding positive behaviour changes and communicating clear expectations of those with ADHD have also proven effective. Clinical experience has shown that the most effective treatment for ADHD is a combination of medication (when necessary), therapy or counselling to learn coping skills and adaptive behaviours, and ADD coaching for adults. Treatment rates are much lower for selected groups such as girls, minorities, and children receiving care though public service systems.
