Behavioral ADHD is common. Approximately one out of every two children with the disorder are hostile or negative in their behavior, and a smaller number exhibit aggressive behavior toward people or animals, vandalism or breaking important rules. Needless to say that behavioral ADHD can create a plethora of challenges in a number of different settings including home, school and social encounters. But before we get into how to better manage behavioral ADHD let’s briefly back up and refresh our memories as to what attention deficit disorder actually is.

Attention deficit disorder is a mental illness best described as difficulty paying attention combined with a high degree of restlessness and impulsive behavior; the name of the disorder is actually attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which is abbreviated ADHD. Symptoms begin before the age of 7, last for at least 6 months, and cause the child a great deal of difficulty in at least two settings, normally home and school. Sometimes the condition resolves itself in adolescence but in over 50% of the cases it accompanies the ADHD child into adulthood.

Behavioral ADHD can be a big problem at any age. In school aged children the key to keeping them out of trouble is to avoid situations and times of the day when problems are most likely to arise. The most likely times of the day when problems are likely to occur is when there is less structure in place, such as lunchtime and break time. Other problem times include moving from one activity to another, interacting with fellow students or teachers, and dealing with people who simply don’t grasp or accept ADHD.

Behavioral ADHD is a problem with self regulation stemming from a biological neurotransmitter imbalance in the brain. A big part of this condition is the primary symptom of impulsivity combined with obsessiveness. Impulsivity is thought to be caused by too much norepinephrine or too little dopamine whereas obsessiveness can be a sign of too much dopamine in relation to the amount of serotonin. When you combine the inability to let go with impulsive action it creates a toxic mix that is sure to create a great many behavioral challenges. Ultimately there are only three choices in your quest to overcome behavioral ADHD; avoid the situation, modify actions and thoughts through behavioral therapy, or correct the biological imbalance. Most experts believe that a combination of the three is actually the best and most long lasting approach to overcoming this difficult condition.

What Next? When the symptoms of behavioral ADHD are identified finding help should be the number one goal. In this pursuit many parents of ADHD children and adults alike have found answers in the form of natural ADHD remedies. Whether you are worried about the side effects posed by prescription drugs for ADHD or you want to get to the root of the problem rather than just suppress symptoms, ADHD alternative treatment methods will deliver powerful, lasting results.
