Behavioral Teaching Strategies

As a doctor and family therapist, I’m often asked for ADHD teaching strategies.

For parents and teachers, growing or teaching a child who suffers from sympathy deficit disorder presents a multitude of challenges, but it can be managed and the required tips at last found in currently news story is planning to benefit all direct caregivers. More importantly, I will discuss the a large amount of effective ADHD teaching strategies to date who will result in your simple success and your peace of mind. Behavioral Teaching Strategies

Example: The Coin Game

Parents like it because it improves memory and sequencing as well as attention and concentration, and kids enjoy it because it’s fast-paced and fun. First, you will need a small pile of assorted coins, a cardboard sheet to cover them, and a stopwatch (or a regular watch with a second hand.)

Choose five of the coins from the pile (for this example, we’ll say three pennies and two nickels) and put them into a sequence. Now, tell your child to “Look carefully at the coins arranged on the table.” Then, cover the coins with the cardboard. Start the stopwatch, and then ask them to make the same pattern using the coins from the pile. When they are finished, mark the time with the stopwatch and remove the cardboard cover. Write down the time it took them to complete the pattern and whether or not they were correct. If they didn’t complete it correctly, have them keep trying until they can do it. You can increase the difficulty of the patterns as you go, and include pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. You’ll see your child’s concentration and sequencing improve the more they play, which is a great reward for both of you. Behavioral Teaching Strategies

In addition, I have been testing a new behavioral program developed by a fellow doctor that teaches parents and teachers how to communicate, motivate, and manage children suffering from ADD/ADHD. These ADHD teaching strategies, such as methods for calming a hyperactive child, are priceless for families who just want some peace and quiet. Behavioral Teaching Strategies

It provides techniques that can improve children’s ability to concentrate, stay on-task, and control impulsive behavior. Most importantly, in surveys conducted at six month and one year follow up, parents reported a newfound opportunity to have a rewarding relationship with their child as a result using this program. Don’t let your love ones suffer anymore! Lead them out through Behavioral Teaching Strategies program now!

How do you prevent ADHD behavioral issues at home? There can be many incidences of bad behavior which are exacerbated in the ADHD child because of the symptoms of inattentiveness, restlessness, fidgeting and hyperactivity. If you add a co-morbid disorder such as ODD, then physical aggression coupled with verbal abuse may compound the problems.

One of the big ADHD behavioral issues is the problem of shouting and screaming matches.Very often parents react to bad behavior by yelling back or shouting or threatening. This is bound to boomerang because you have descended to the child’s level. Getting into a screaming match is an own goal in many ways. Resolving to discuss the child’s behavior later when things have calmed down is a good idea.

One of the more vexed ADHD behavioral issues is whether or not to use time out and whether to use time out for yourself ! Remember though that some psychologists say that ADHD kids need a shorter time out so the rule of one minute per year of age should be reduced. You can also try to turn the consequence scenario into a reward one. Here is what you do. You tell the child that the time out is for 6 minutes whereas it is only about 3 minutes. Tell the child that if he really is quiet, he can get away with 3 minutes. This gives him a goal and a prize as well.

The second thing to bear in mind is to have a consistent reaction ready for some of the ADHD behavioral issues so that nothing is left to chance or that you react in a random way. You can identify some of the problems in advance and you can stick to your strategy. Knowing these in advance helps, as you can avoid certain situations.

You are on the lookout for good behavior rather than bad. Concentrate on the good behavior and praise it promptly and make specific reference to what the child has achieved rather than ‘good boy/girl’. Here you are reinforcing good behavior and rewarding it too. Not just with a prize but also with an affectionate hug. Psychologists say that ADHD kids respond really well to physical affection and touch. This is important too in the teenage years as a lack of physical affection sometimes encourages teens to experiment rather early with sex.

The homework battle is one of the most difficult ADHD behavioral issues. Providing a distraction free zone which is off limits as regards computers, phones, TV and visitors can be a good starting point. Also establish the time and the routine and of necessary, post this on the fridge door so everybody knows that homework time is sacred and cannot be interrupted.

Behavioral ADHD is common. Approximately one out of every two children with the disorder are hostile or negative in their behavior, and a smaller number exhibit aggressive behavior toward people or animals, vandalism or breaking important rules. Needless to say that behavioral ADHD can create a plethora of challenges in a number of different settings including home, school and social encounters. But before we get into how to better manage behavioral ADHD let’s briefly back up and refresh our memories as to what attention deficit disorder actually is.

Attention deficit disorder is a mental illness best described as difficulty paying attention combined with a high degree of restlessness and impulsive behavior; the name of the disorder is actually attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which is abbreviated ADHD. Symptoms begin before the age of 7, last for at least 6 months, and cause the child a great deal of difficulty in at least two settings, normally home and school. Sometimes the condition resolves itself in adolescence but in over 50% of the cases it accompanies the ADHD child into adulthood.

Behavioral ADHD can be a big problem at any age. In school aged children the key to keeping them out of trouble is to avoid situations and times of the day when problems are most likely to arise. The most likely times of the day when problems are likely to occur is when there is less structure in place, such as lunchtime and break time. Other problem times include moving from one activity to another, interacting with fellow students or teachers, and dealing with people who simply don’t grasp or accept ADHD.

Behavioral ADHD is a problem with self regulation stemming from a biological neurotransmitter imbalance in the brain. A big part of this condition is the primary symptom of impulsivity combined with obsessiveness. Impulsivity is thought to be caused by too much norepinephrine or too little dopamine whereas obsessiveness can be a sign of too much dopamine in relation to the amount of serotonin. When you combine the inability to let go with impulsive action it creates a toxic mix that is sure to create a great many behavioral challenges. Ultimately there are only three choices in your quest to overcome behavioral ADHD; avoid the situation, modify actions and thoughts through behavioral therapy, or correct the biological imbalance. Most experts believe that a combination of the three is actually the best and most long lasting approach to overcoming this difficult condition.

What Next? When the symptoms of behavioral ADHD are identified finding help should be the number one goal. In this pursuit many parents of ADHD children and adults alike have found answers in the form of natural ADHD remedies. Whether you are worried about the side effects posed by prescription drugs for ADHD or you want to get to the root of the problem rather than just suppress symptoms, ADHD alternative treatment methods will deliver powerful, lasting results.
