As a physician who treats ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders one always see such a variety of symptoms and severity of symptoms. As ASD is thought to be multifactorial it is always important to get as specific as possible with the treatments so as not to waste the time and resources of both the doctor and family. We use a sensory motor hemispheric approach but always try to eliminate any of the common scientificly established links to autism and the conditions associated with this spectrum of disorders. As such, one of the supplements found to help children suffering with these conditions are Omega 3 fatty acids. Let’s go to the literature.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that fatty acid deficiencies or imbalances may contribute to childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 6-week pilot trial investigating the effects of 1.5 g/d of omega-3 fatty acids (.84 g/d eicosapentaenoic acid, .7 g/d docosahexaenoic acid) supplementation in 13 children (aged 5 to 17 years) with autistic disorders accompanied by severe tantrums, aggression, or self-injurious behavior. The outcome measure was the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) at 6 weeks. RESULTS: We observed an advantage of omega-3 fatty acids compared with placebo for hyperactivity and stereotypy, each with a large effect size. Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated a trend toward superiority of omega-3 fatty acids over placebo for hyperactivity. No clinically relevant adverse effects were elicited in either group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study provide preliminary evidence that omega-3 fatty acids may be an effective treatment for children with autism.

Phospholipid fatty acids are major structural components of neuronal cell membranes, which modulate membrane fluidity and hence function. Evidence from clinical and biochemical sources have indicated changes in the metabolism of fatty acids in several psychiatric disorders. We examined the phospholipid fatty acids in the plasma of a population of autistic subjects compared to mentally retarded controls. Our results showed a marked reduction in the levels of 22: 6n-3 (23%) in the autistic subjects, resulting in significantly lower levels of total (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (20%), without significant reduction in the (n-6) PUFA series, and consequently a significant increase in the (n-6)/(n-3) ratio (25%). These variations are discussed in terms of potential differences in PUFA dietary intake, metabolism, or incorporation into cellular membranes between the two groups of subjects. These results open up interesting perspectives for the investigation of new biological indices in autism. Moreover, this might have new therapeutic implications in terms of child nutrition. OBJECTIVE: Estimation of free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in blood and evaluation of behavior of autistic children before and after taking fish oil (Efalex) were performed. DESIGN AND METHODS: 30 autistic children (18 males and 12 females) aged 3-11 years and 30 healthy children as control group were included in this study. Tandem mass spectrometry and CARS were used to estimate the free PUFAs from dried blood spot and to evaluate the autistic behavior respectively. RESULTS: Before taking Efalex, linolenic acid showed a significant reduction (71%), followed by docosahexaenoic acid (65%) and arachidonic acid (45%), while linoleic acid was the least affected PUFA (32%). After taking Efalex, 66% of autistic children showed clinical and biochemical improvement, linolenic acid and docosahexaenoic acid showed the highest levels after Efalex supplementation. CONCLUSION: PUFA supplementation may play an important role in ameliorating the autistic behavior.
These studies support that children with ADHD Aspergers tourettes, OCD and Autism should consider Omega 3 supplementation as part of their treatment program and discuss these issues with their physician.

While talking to an autistic child, my mother suddenly see the shoes I wear are Crocs, never seem before in Staunton, VA (although as late as January 2008). She immediately focuses on the latter, manifesting symptoms of adult ADD perfect. Someone give this woman a Ritalin!
More common than Down’s Syndrome, childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, even blindness and deafness, are Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Today in Canada, at least 1 in every 165 children are diagnosed with a form of autism, a developmental disorder that seriously limits a child’s ability to communicate and interact with others and their surroundings. For decades, doctors, specialists, and organizations like Autism Speaks and The Geneva Centre for Autism have been stumped as to the causes of ASDs – why it sometimes appears in families with histories of autism and other times occurs out of the blue, why one child can be diagnosed with it while their sibling develops without a problem, and why autism manifests itself so differently in each person, and to various levels of severity from the milder form of Asperger’s Syndrome to the potentially life-threatening Rett Syndrome.

There are now five types of effective recognized professional treatments for ADD, ADHD, and Autism:
1. Drug treatments: (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, etc). Most of these drugs contain methylphenidate, the same ingredient as “speed” on the street where it’s highly illegal, and addictive to many. They do help education authorities to “control” a child while at school. Some schools even get a subsidy for every Ritalin user. PERHAPS a conflict of interest – YOU THINK? This type of “medication” does NOT “cure” anything. Suppressing symptoms can also suppress potential. In addition, there are many drug side effects and addictions as serious drawbacks to using Ritalin and similar drugs. You can check on these facts if you aren’t convinced about these dangers at:
http://ADHD-biofeedback.com/ritalin.html
2. Allergy treatments. For several years, I worked with another researcher developing End-Point-Titration in a Florida allergy clinic. In my opinion, EPT is the only truly effective method of allergy/sensitivity cure therapy. During that time, (EEG biofeedback was not known to me then), I used this technique along with others to successfully treat ADD/ADHD in several children. However, this EPT therapy is usually very expensive, ranging up to $10,000 in expensive “doctor” time to diagnose and treat.
3, Nutritional treatments. Many “cures” have been seen by taking some allergens out of the diet, supplying enzymes and probiotics to diets, etc. This might be considered as an addition to the allergy treatments above.
4. EEG Biofeedback training. Starting in the 70’s, more and more clinicians have found that training to raise the SMR brain wave while controlling or lowering Theta works to alleviate or remove those symptoms of attention and concentration deficit, impulsive and hyperactive behavior, autism, epilepsy, and even depression and schizophrenia symptoms. The same drawback of very high cost is here as well, as this training in a clinic also requires hours and hours of expensive clinic/doctor time. Typical costs for 60 half-hour-training sessions for ADD/ADHD/autism run from $3000 to $10,000. Leasing from BHT Inc can cut this cost to under $450 in most cases.
5. Passive Auditory brainwave Training. Since April 2004, Dr Bate has conducted successful experiments in substituting passive auditory messaging for the expensive EEG biofeedback (and computer). The success rate is very comparable to that of EEG biofeedback (above). In the experiments Dr Bate found that this “Brain Training” might take as long as two to three months, but this is also the case with EEG biofeedback (Neurofeedback). There’s no such thing as an instant “cure” with either. Both take some time as they are both actually changing the amplitude of brain waves.
EEG Biofeedback (AKA neurofeedback) has been in use since the 1970s. It is completely safe (so safe that no state in the US evens requires a license). Many research and personal reports show that well over 500,000 diagnosed ADD/ADHD persons have been “trained” out of these brain disorders with it. These kids sit quietly in class and learn, and in most cases, their measured IQ goes up.
The data from dozens of clinicians, and thousands of ADD/ADHD subject’s shows with 40 half-hour sessions, approximately 50% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose all the “brain problem” symptoms. With 60 half-hour sessions, or 60 nights of auditory brainwave Training, approximately 85% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose most or all of these “brain problem” symptoms. “Success” in this training is considered to be the trainee sitting still in class, paying attention, learning easily, doing assigned homework in the time allotted, and in many cases, an increase in tested IQ. Needless to say, getting off all dangerous drugs is also an important criterion.
What about the “other” 15%? Well, remember that ADD/ADHD is NOT a disease. It’s more like a broad “continuum” ranging from the boy who eats candy at lunch, and is hyper for the afternoon all the way up to non-communicating autism. Also remember that diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, and Autism is more art than science, and is done more for insurance than for therapy. Diagnosis and separation of ADD-Autism symptoms is a “guess” at best, and different doctors misdiagnose many children.
Another very important success factor is “motivation” of the trainee. Some clinicians are not as good at this as others. This also applies to parents and teachers. The advantage of the Bate Auditory Training system is that no motivation is required. Just let it run 24/7.
Each child is an individual, and different in many ways. Those children that are closer on the continuum to Autism are the ones that mostly compose this 15%. These children take more sessions (up to 200 in one case reported by Dr Von Hilsheimer, an internationally recognized clinical expert), but even these more serious cases are trainable with EEG biofeedback or Bate Auditory Training. Since the cost is always a factor, the first choice should be the BAT system, as it is a small fraction of the other costs
