ADHD remains one of the most misunderstood psychiatric disorders in all of the mental health profession. Contributing to much of the confusion surrounding the condition is the very negative effects of the common psychiatric drugs prescribed for it. Since many are worried about the potentially disastrous side effects of these drugs, there is a great deal of fear surrounding seeking treatment. However, there is some positive news in regards to this. There have been many great strides in the realm of alternative medicine for ADHD. And, yes, ADHD alternative medicine can deliver positive results without many of the risks associated with the more traditional treatment methods.

Natural Herbal Remedies

Thankfully, there are a number of natural remedies for ADHD. Despite their relative low profile, these herbal treatments have a solid track record for delivering highly positive results.

Hyoscyamus – This is a natural plant extract that was commonly used as a calming agent for those that suffered from excess fidgeting and restlessness. In a way, you could consider this herbal supplement the ADHD treatment of ancient antiquity. Then again, that would not be a completely accurate assessment since it is still used to this day.

Arsen Iod – This could be considered an “anger management” herbal supplement since it is commonly employed to relieve stress and anger. Through taking this herbal ADHD alternative medicine, much of the more agitation based outbursts of ADHD can be reduced.

Tuberculinum – One of the main symptoms of ADHD is a feeling of boredom which yields the need for perpetual stimulation. Of course, this can lead to disruptive behavior and other such problems. For those in need of a treatment that can alleviate the onset of such behavior, tuberculinum can provide the reprieve needed. It is one of the most successful brands of alternative medicine for ADHD in terms of its ability to curtail such behavioral problems.

Verta Alb – When one must contend with high anxiety or anxiousness, a great deal of restlessness can occur. This is where a number of the disruptive physical behavior patterns of ADHD start to manifest. Through the use of Verta Alb, much of this extreme anxiety can be reduced to manageable levels. And, of course, this is achieved without the negative consequences of sedatives and other mood altering drugs.

While we have mainly discussed the ability of alternative medicine for ADHD to curtail a number of the serious physical manifestations of the condition, some may wonder about the value of these treatments towards the psychological ones. Actually, the two go hand in hand. That is, if the physical restlessness of ADHD is curtailed, the negative psychological energy contributing to the restlessness is dissipating as well.

In short, these herbal remedies are not numbing agents designed to restrict movement. They are well rounded herbal treatments that can blunt the impact ADHD can have on a child or adult’s life. As such, alternative medicine for ADHD   can allow the person afflicted with the condition to once again live a complete and free life. That alone makes the use of these remedies infinitely valuable.

ADHD medication gets more and more controversial with drug companies refusing to admit that there is any problem whatsoever with their mind-altering drugs such as Focalin, Risperdal and Concerta. Obviously parents want to know what are the alternative treatments for ADHD. Alternative can mean a host of things ranging from meditation ,diet, behaviour therapy, counselling, yoga, equine therapy, Bach flower remedies and biofeedback just to name a few.

The bottom line is that there is no cure for ADHD and medication by psychostimulants can only help control the symptoms of inattention, squirming, outbursts and inappropriate behaviour. There have been over 200 studies showing that medication can be effective in treating ADHD but these studies rarely mention the side effects and the risks. Not many people mention what are the alternative treatments for ADHD, simply because it does not pay them to do so.

Anyone can find the warnings on the boxes of tablets and can visit the FDA site which has been forced to issue countless warnings about what the risks are. They cover heart attacks, blood pressure problems, anxiety and depression, hallucinations and psychotic episodes and suicidal thoughts. There has been much debate about these warnings saying that they are useless and this is what you would expect from any medication. There are always side effects and risks.

But here we are talking about drugs affecting the brain development of our children. The drug companies cannot tell us exactly how these drugs work and furthermore will not reveal what the long term effects are or could be. Nobody knows or nobody is telling. There is simply no profit at all in publicising what are the alternative treatments for ADHD.

One thing is clear and that is that medication will not solve very much at all apart from keeping the child’s teacher off the phone and perhaps calming the child. Experts now agree at least, that medication must be carried out in conjunction with some lifestyle changes and behaviour modification. If this is not done, treatment may not work either effectively or efficiently and the ADHD child will be among the 60% of children who carry the condition into adulthood.

ADHD behaviour therapy or simply parenting skills is crucial in helping the ADHD child to avoid parent-child conflict and spoilt relationships with peers at school and at play. So what is the alternative to medication ? Certainly while vitamins and supplements and a nutritious diet can help a little, the main problem to be addressed is how to calm the child and help him focus without drugging him. When parents ask what are the alternative treatments for ADHD, the answer is that homeopathic and herbal remedies are by far the safest, most effective and cheapest option they can get. None of the websites on ADD and ADHD will tell you anything about this but the site below this article will.

When parents sometimes look at the range of ADHD alternative medications available, they are a bit bewildered and I am not surprised. These alternative treatments for children with ADHD range from medications (psychostimulants) to herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, Bach flower remedies, diet and nutrition, EEG biofeedback and behavioural therapy. Educational support and parental skills are generally regarded as an essential parachute for the ADHD child and the other treatments can be regarded as options. But where do you start ? Strictly speaking only the conventional medicines and homeopathic treatment could be regarded as medications in the strict sense of the term. Three of the options caught my attention as they are not often mentioned in the literature on ADHD alternative medications.

I have used Bach flower remedies with great success for anxiety and stress. Any disease according to Dr. Bach is brought on by negative emotions such as fear, sorrow and anger. As a homeopath and herbalist Dr. Bach found that certain extracts from flowers affected our mood and negative feelings, thereby restoring balance and healing to the body. Many people find this strange but there are many parents who swear that this type of non-invasive treatment is effective and is one of the more valid alternative treatments for children with ADHD. Perhaps the most distinguished Bach flower enthusiast is Queen Elizabeth II who has been treated with Bach flower remedies for many years.

With EEG biofeedback, the patient can see on a video screen how his brain waves are working when related to how he or she is feeling or what emotional state or level of attention she is experiencing. Therapy consists of making the patient work with the brain waves for optimal results. With ADHD patients, they generally have to attend up to about forty sessions but the treatment has no side effects at all. Certainly one of the ADHD alternative medications worth considering.

Because of the side effects of psychostimulants an the risk of substance abuse, many parents are attracted to homeopathic remedies for ADHD. We now know that up to 20% of children on the ADHD drugs just do not respond initially to the treatment and may have problems with the side effects which range from sleep problems, fatigue, weight loss and a host of others too numerous to mention here. With such a high percentage and with FDA warnings increasing daily, it is no surprise that alternative treatments for children with ADHD are gaining ground.

The British Homeopathic Journal have published a double blind trial results which showed that homeopathy is effective in treating some of the symptoms of fidgeting, restlessness and inattention. Learn about what exactly goes into a homeopathic remedy and the processes involved in their preparation. You will be pleasantly surprised that they are just as effective in treating ADHD as psychostimulants and carry no risks of drug abuse which is such a relief to many parents. It is now widely regarded as one of the safest ADHD alternative medications in existence today.

A quiet revolution has been taking place recently! It seems that medical authorities, experts or gurus or whatever you like to call them, are waking up and actually telling parents that ADHD meds are just not sufficient and that behavior modification therapy or other psychological interventions are necessary alongside with the medicines. This is an opening towards a much broader and more enlightened view of ADHD which will eventually include alternative treatments for children with ADHD.

What are the alternative treatments for children with ADHD available now? Apart from behavioral therapies which now must be used in any treatment for ADHD, there is a wide range to choose from. dietary programs, EEG biofeedback, herbal remedies and homeopathic remedies.

The ADHD alternative medications which I think are the most useful are combining a homeopathic remedy with ADHD behavioral therapy. The amount of time that parents waste in trying to establish the correct dose of the mind altering drugs they are stuffing down their kids is incredible. They then have to worry about the child’s appetite, sleep problems, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, monitoring of heart problems. In many cases, their children may have few or none of these side effects but the risks in the long term are significant and have been deliberately played down by Big Pharm. That is why a homeopathic remedy for ADHD saves so much time and worry as it is the safest of the ADHD alternative medications out there. There are no side effects and there are no risks either. How do we know there are no risks? Simply because the drug companies know that and if there were, they would have financed all the studies on those to discredit the homeopathic cures. In many ways it is a simple choice and it also costs a lot less. That makes it, in my opinion, one of the most effective alternative treatments for children with ADHD.

Maybe you know parents who are prisoners in their own homes? Maybe you yourself are subject to violent, aggressive behaviour on the part of your kids. There may be problems with defiance, disobedience, outbursts and abuse of siblings. I know other families though who refused to have their lives ruined and who opted for a behavioral therapy program. In using this program they learnt how to set up rewards and consequences, set up a behavior plan that both children and parents sign up to and a host of other techniques which saved their families from ruin. I would not even define ADHD behavior therapy as one of the alternative treatments for children with ADHD. I would simply say that it is an essential element in any ADHD treatment program and the all the medical gurus from the FDA to the American Academy of Pediatrics now agree with me!

I know some parents in this economic crisis who are now looking at alternative treatments for ADHD simply because they have to choose a cheaper health plan which will not cover the cost of ADHD medication. They are therefore attracted by alternative ADHD therapy especially ADHD homeopathic remedy which is one of the cheapest options available now.

There is now a whole debate raging in the forums about all the clinical trials on ADHD medications which are double -blind and randomized till the cows come home. Guess what? Apart from spending millions of dollars on these, the pharmaceutical companies have also spent a considerable sum of money to show that alternative treatments for ADHD do NOT work ! Research costs money and the Big Pharm has covered all the loopholes. If you had time to look for them on the Internet you would find that other studies have been done to show that alternative treatments for ADHD can be just as effective and do not have any worrying side effects. But they are hidden away and lack funding to make them public.

There is a whole cohort of parents who just cannot stand the side effects of ADHD drugs and are now seriously looking at behavioural therapy as treatment for ADHD along with all the other alternative treatments out there. If you take a behavioural therapy course you will learn skills and techniques where you can stop arguing instantly with a child. There are techniques you can learn to stop defiant children being nasty, aggressive and foul mouthed.

Some parents have gone for neurofeedback and biofeedback as their chosen treatment for ADHD. Others have tried to employ an occupational therapist for their children and some others have tried an ADHD coach. Many people believe that exercise, proper diet and parenting skills can be a real help in alleviating ADHD symptoms such as lack of focus, restlessness and over-excitability.

The big worry parents have is that by medicating their kids at such an early age, they are worried about the child’s brain development. These drugs act directly on the brain chemical or neurotransmitters which in turn can affect how we control our impulses, moods, inhibitions and of course our memory. Apart from the expense of Adderall, Focalin Rx and all the rest, there are the side effects to cope with which sometimes are no joke. This is where alternative treatments for ADHD especially homeopathic remedies win hands down as there are no side effects and no risks either. Why not find out more by clicking on the link below and save yourself a ton of energy by not having to do a whole course on behaviour therapy.

Parents with ADHD children know all about the difficulty of trying to raise their child properly and having to cope with the extreme behavioral problems that come with the disorder. In response to this new modern epidemic mainstream medical companies have of course made products that can help solve the child’s problem (and their parent’s frustration!) by the use of drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. To compliment this many also send their children to behavioral therapy which is expensive and time consuming; a perfect combination for an industry trying to make money out of a serious problem. Recently however studies have shown that ADHD drugs do not cure the problem but simply put off the problem without curing it. Add to this that the studies show the drugs may stunt growth and may also cause long term problems that have not been totally confirmed and we can see drugs may not be the answer. So what alternative attention deficit disorder treatments are there and can there be a totally natural adhd treatment so that parents can be assured of a healthy and happy child, and do they work? Let’s look at a few examples:

Diet

One approach to changing a child’s behavior that has become popular is to control, their diet to cut out certain foods and additives that promote hyperactive behavior and increase or decrease nutrients that help with focusing and calmness. This approach is often very healthy as the diets are usually quite good if not exciting. The biggest problem usually lies in sugar and caffeine but there are also many other surprising foods that may make more of an impact than you think. The downsides are that it is hard to get an ADHD kid to eat all the things you prepare as they are used to a different more exiting diet. If you can get them to stick to the changes there are many children who may benefit from this but not everyone has had immediate success with just this approach depending on the severity of their disorder.

Behavior modification programs

This is a system of changing the way a child acts by rewarding them for good behavior and not giving in and giving them what they want for bad behavior. While most parents do this to a degree anyway many have taken this to a new level by making it into a game by scoring the child and promoting active tasks. While this may not eliminate ADHD it can modify some more antisocial and aggressive behaviors if you can channel that energy into useful things. Not all children take to this however and it can end up being a battle to get them to participate but still a large number of people have managed to turn the whirlwind energy of the child into a force for good!

Biofeedback

This is a newer treatment that revolves around the brainwave patterns that an ADHD sufferer experiences. By measuring brainwaves through a machine it is possible to adjust these patterns by rewarding the right brainwaves via a computer game or some other learning tool, when the person does the right thing mentally they are rewarded and the brain responds by adjusting the way it behaves. This is less invasive than it sounds as sensors are placed on the scalp to measure the brainwaves but no other equipment is actually touching the child. This requires some significant resources however and is not readily available.

Auditory Integration Training

There is evidence to support then notion that some learning disabilities ADHD included are a result of a problem with a child’s hearing. Problems like this can cause a child to “tune out” or cover their ears or become aggressive when particular sounds or frequencies are heard. The treatment that goes with this focuses on using sounds that stimulate the possible problem areas of the inner ear and the way it interacts with the brain. By modulating and adjusting these frequencies it is possible to gain long term benefit to their hearing and also short term increases to attention span and social behaviors.

As we can see there are many alternative attention deficit disorder treatments that do not require mind altering drugs but work holistically and naturally. Some even focus on simply redirecting the ADHD sufferers energy into beneficial things implying that it can be a blessing not a curse if refocused. In any event there are options for natural ADHD remedies that have had proven success!

Current estimates put between 4 and 12 % of school children, as having ADHD and treatment plans for this chronic condition will generally include the use of medication to modify behavior. However, these do come with side effects are not all children will respond to them, which is why some parents prefer to adopt an alternative method to replace or work alongside medications to minimize the dose.

Most parents would like to see their child drug-free if possible, as some of the side effects of ADHD stimulant medication are decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, withdrawal from social activities and friends and jitteriness.

The treatment options that can be adopted that don’t rely on medication include behavior therapy, neurofeedback therapy, and education intervention. The ultimate goal of all these three approaches is to encourage the frequency of positive behaviors, while minimizing the symptoms of ADHD – inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

However unlike medications, these treatments don’t come out of a bottle, but require work on behalf of parents, teachers, professionals and the child. For example, these ADHD treatments require an experienced educator or therapist to devise an individual program for the child and the techniques will be taught to family members and the child to ensure they follow through at home.

These forms of treatments for ADHD are devised to improve symptoms while increasing the chance of preventing further problems associated with the disorder in the future.

These methods are not like drugs, they are not a ‘quick fixes’ and results won’t be seen overnight. They aim to be long-term solutions that truly make a difference to a child with ADHD, teaching them to recognize their behaviors and learning ways to adjust them. They try to accommodate the child and make it easier for them to conform to accepted behaviors without using drugs to mask behaviors or personality.

And unlike medications, these modes of treatment require patience on behalf of the people administering the therapy and additional assistance from people who are likely to come in contact with the child on a constant basis.
Consistency is key when adopting behavioral therapy otherwise confusion can set in. Once the ground rules have been set and the rewards and punishments are clearly defined they should be followed by all parties with no exceptions.

Don’t forget to offer emotional support to your child. Children with ADHD get used to hearing how they are always doing things they shouldn’t and being reprimanded for their behavior. They can also struggle to make friends as a result of their behaviors. This can lead to a low self-esteem and in some cases, depression. So it’s important to give praise where you can and encourage them to use any skills they have whether it’s in sports or another creative outlet.

As you have probably realized, ADHD and treatments that don’t rely on medications are not a quick fix alternative. These are long-term treatments that you will have to continue to work with. You should discuss these alternatives with your child’s doctor and teachers. Never stop medication unless it has been discussed with your doctor.

Alternative Treatments for ADHD has been studied extensively and the results are quite impressive. One alternative treatment you can look into are food allergies which rate high on the list because of the association ADHD. Long term exposure to the same products over and over in the diet can cause negative reactions. There are many wheat allergies; it is in cereal, breaded coatings for children’s fish sticks and chicken nuggets and a myriad of other products. When the intestine is exposed to these proteins (wheat, rye, oats and barley) it can become damaged causing absorption and digestion problems.

If a child is not receiving vital nutrients they will not be able to concentrate or learn and have attention problems; does this sound like ADHD? Of course not all children have these food sensitivities, but it has been on the rise along with peanuts and dairy. You can be tested for gluten intolerance but since blood tests sometimes have a false negative the best way to test for this is a stool sample.

A simple test that you can do at home would be to omit gluten products from the diet. Gluten which is a protein in wheat, rye, oats and barley causes the damage, so if you eliminate those products you would probably see the change in your child within days.

Other alternative solutions for kids with ADHD associated with diet options would be the elimination of chemical additives like dyes and artificial sweeteners, sugar, nitrates in lunch meats, and dairy. The best way to see if any food is causing problems with ADHD is to eliminate the major foods that cause allergies for three months then, slowly add them back one at a time to see if there’s a reaction or behavioral issue.

There are nutritional supplements like Omega-3’s, GABA and homeopathic drops that can be added to juice, water or milk which can help balance the child’s system and have been shown to help, reverse or completely stop ADHD symptoms!
