Attention Deficit Disorder is often difficult to diagnose in adulthood as it sometimes masked by relationship problems, mood disorders, substance abuse, employment issues, or other psychological disorders. It was previously believed that children and adolescents would grow out of ADD, but it has just been acknowledged in the last few decades that it persists into adulthood. Actually, 67% of children with ADD will continue to exhibit signs well into adulthood. ADD is very difficult to diagnose in adults and sometimes only occurs after a child of the adult is diagnosed and the genetic link is made.

How is Attention Deficit Disorder exhibited in adults? Actually, in much the same ways as in children. Adults with ADD often have difficulty in completing assignments, fail to pay close attention to details, fidget, are inattentive, are unorganized, and talk excessively. Unfortunately, adult ADD is often commingled with lack of self-control, poor memory, anxiety, depression, mood swings, employment issues, chronic lateness, and difficulties regulating motivation, emotions and arousal. Like their child counterparts, these behaviors cause an inability to function in every day activities, which can especially cause a problem in employment situations.

Adults that have grown up being undiagnosed as having ADD often suffer from low self-esteem and feel like they are stupid, lazy, or even crazy. Diagnosing them as adults may lay to rest lifelong perception issues they may have had with themselves and may allow them to improve on self-esteem, as well as work skills and performance. It is believed that these reasons could actually be the basis for the depression and other psychological issues they have as adults.

Treatment for adults often includes medication, education, behavior skill building to better cope with their disorder, and counselling. Stimulant medication, as with children, may be the first stage in treatment. However, this is not a cure and should be coupled with behavior modification to reach full potential. Counseling may very well be an important aspect of treatment, as ongoing psychologically issues have been present. Likewise, just being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder may cause reason to seek counseling in order to come to terms with the diagnosis.

The important thing for an adult to remember when they have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder is that there is help available and treatment is easily attainable. They should find comfort in understanding the root of their behavior and actions and knowing help is available.

Did you know that children are not the only ones that suffer from attention deficit disorder. There are several very intelligent adults that are currently struggling with adult attention deficit disorder as well. Even though attention deficit disorder is nothing to be ashamed of, it is vital that you seek out treatment and help, because these things can improve the quality of your life significantly. Most of the sufferers have a tendency of trying to hide their condition, and because of that, over time their confidence levels decrease. After you have taken active steps to learn more about adult ADD and everything that it entails, and searched for a professional opinion, then you should find the following ways to counter adult attention deficit disorder will be very useful for you.

Overcome all of your inattentiveness. When you are unable to pay attention or focus, it can be a very annoying trait; however it is not really all that difficult to deal with. You have to train yourself to follow a certain schedule each and every day based on everything that you need to get accomplished. By doing this, you will have something concrete that you can focus on and follow; because you have already acknowledged all of the tasks that you are held responsible for. Now this will not always help. There will be days when you just cannot concentrate on what you know you should be doing that day. Despite this you do not need to lose the entire day to non-productivity. Consider treating yourself to a project that you would love to be working on rather than what you know you should be working on. This will redirect your thinking into a positive mode, you will become motivated and you will redirect that hyper energy into something positive and probably get the entire project done that day. This will make the next day seem brighter since you will feel that you have accomplished something and your focus will come back to what you know you need to do as well and your productivity will continue.

Face the actual problem. There is not anything that can be more comforting than facing up and admitting that you have a problem, and that does not mean you are not normal. By taking the time to admit that you really have a problem, you are going to find that it is a lot easier for you to take all of the active steps needed in order to treat your problem.

Kick the restlessness. Your body and mind are completely restless because they find that certain tasks on hand are too boring or that they lack the overall challenge. You should engage in frequent exercise sessions, like playing soccer four times a week or going to the gym.

When necessary, you need to distance yourself. Once you have talked with your family and friends, you should have the ability to identify certain situations and quiet possibly the warning signs that you are becoming agitated or that you are beginning to lose your focus. Once you feel that the symptoms are coming on, you should take a few deep breathes and start calming yourself down.

Get rid of the boredom. In the event that you are aware that your job is a little too boring for you, you need to try to find ways that you can make it challenging and interesting. There are different ways to challenge yourself in a job. If the job is boring, challenge yourself by trying to finish certain projects quicker. You need to find ways to motivate yourself during boring types of projects.

Overall, you can overcome your adult attention deficit disorder by following these methods and visiting your doctor on a regular basis.

Adult attention deficit disorder, or adult ADD, can be a very frustrating condition to have. Almost all of the initial research and focus for the attention deficit disorders was focused on children and adolescents, but adults are just as likely to have the condition as youths. The disorder normally makes itself apparent during childhood, with difficulties at school being one of the most common hallmarks of the condition, which helps to explain why so much focus has been on children with the disease. But children with attention deficit disorder grow up to be adults with attention deficit disorder.

ADD is essentially the same condition as the one children have. If you are an adult and you are having trouble focusing at work, difficulty listening to people in everyday conversations, find yourself interrupting people a lot, losing things frequently, are easily distracted from tasks, are easily frustrated or find yourself feeling over stimulated often, you may have adult attention deficit disorder.

Treatment for the disorder mirrors the treatments used for children with the condition. The first step you need to take if you suspect you may have an adult attention deficit condition is to of course see a doctor. There are a bunch of other disorders that can mimic an adult attention deficit condition, such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, or bipolar disorder, and its important that these be ruled out before trying treatments.

Typically, most doctors today will begin your adult attention deficit disorder treatment by prescribing a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI, such as Prozac, Zoloft, or Lexapro. SSRIs have been helpful for many in treating their adult attention deficit disorders. If you aren’t getting any relief in your symptoms with an SSRI, you may be prescribed a stimulant, such as Ritalin, Adderall or Concerta. These should be taken with caution as they are addictive drugs, and should be avoided entirely if you have a history of substance abuse.

Most health professionals will agree that there are also a number of non-medication based steps you can take to alleviate some of your symptoms. Getting regular vigorous exercise has been shown to help a lot of people with ADD. Also a diet high in lean protein is recommended. Keeping lists, writing notes, breaking large tasks down into smaller parts and taking other similar steps to counter your disorder will certainly help as well.

I’ll bet that if you have Adult ADHD or ADHD symptoms this story will hit home for you…

I sat among a pile of papers. Everywhere I looked, I saw more work to do, and the longer I looked at it, the more overwhelmed I became. Finally, I burst into tears. “Why can’t I just figure out a system for all of this paper?” I said to myself. There I was, an intelligent woman, ADHD symptoms or no, and I could not figure out how to set up a filing system. I felt stupid.

Really stupid.

So I got up and tried again. And again. And again. (Even though I know very well the worst thing someone with ADHD symptoms can do is to do the same thing over even when its not working!)

Each time I attempted to set up a new system, something wouldn’t work, something I hadn’t thought of, and I’d have to start all over again. I sat holding one single piece of paper, trying to figure out what to do with it, when the telephone rang.

It was an old friend – actually, an old assistant who had moved away to another state across the country.

“What’cha doin?” she asked.

“Trying to figure out how to file all of these @#$@#$ papers!” I exclaimed loudly. Patience is not generally a virtue of those with Adult ADHD.

She took a long pause and then said to me. “What are you doing that for? You’re a speaker – you don’t have the energy to spend on that kind of detail work – you’re a PEOPLE person! Plus, you have ADHD!”

Well, duh. Yes, I am a people person and there I was, taking a lot of time to do something that frankly, I’m not so good at doing. (But of course, stubbornness is anther hallmark of Adult ADHD, and just then it was kicking in hard.)

BUT THEY DON’T THINK ABOUT THAT IN SCHOOL!! Remember back in school when you weren’t so good in a subject? Maybe your ADHD symptoms were diagnosed or maybe they weren’t, but either way, what did they tell you to do? Try harder, right?

Well, I say WRONG! We only have so many strengths and weaknesses, why focus on the weakness!

You see, unfortunately, by the time we get out of school many of us with Adult ADHD are so focused on what we’re not good at, that we fail to even see what we are good at.

And in most cases, what people with Adult ADHD are good at is actually a real talent, a genius-level ability that other “normal” people can’t even come close to. If only people with ADHD symptoms would take a look at what they are best at and love to do, and focus on doing that to the bast of their ability, imagine what would happen!

It makes a lot of sense to me for those with Adult ADHD to focus on strengths. When you focus on what you CAN do because of your ADHD symptoms instead of what you CANNOT do because of ADHD symptoms, opportunities arise and people flow into your life to help you. I’ve experienced this time and time again in my own life, and always when I was working on what I do well.

So my papers? They are all nice and neat in a new filing system which I did not create, but I do follow. Someone else had strengths in organization and helped me out (someone without Adult ADHD) — truly a prosperous and profitable exchange of services.

How about you? What are you focusing on today? What you do well or what you do NOT do well? Adult ADHD comes with both sides–it’s up to you what you emphasize. I challenge you to work your strengths for a month and see what progress you make.

Let me know!

One person’s focus is another person’s distraction, and you really need to take this into consideration when you’re talking about being able to focus, or not focus, with Adult ADHD symptoms.

There are really two sides to focus with Adult ADHD, and more than one way to go about learning to focus better with ADHD symptoms…

We really need to see which one of these sits the best with you and your particular ADHD symptoms.

There are two things people with Adult ADHD should ask themselves. Do you want to be more focused on the things that are normally a distraction, the things that you procrastinate on–or would you rather just not have to do them at all?

I think a lot of times with Adult ADHD symptoms, focus issues occur, projects get dropped off, and things get left undone because of the fact that you’re working on things that you’re not interested in. Boredom is seriously a big deal for people with Adult ADHD symptoms.

When you’re not interested in something, no matter how hard you try to focus, someone with ADHD symptoms can’t necessarily just make themselves be be interested in something.

It becomes natural that once your interest level decreases, so does your activity, and therefore, your frustration can increase because you leave a project undone, you move to the next thing, you’re distracted, or you make a pile. (Making “piles” of stuff all over the house is a big indication of Adult ADHD symptoms!)

The thing about focus is, when you want to focus, you’ve got to be focusing on the things that you really are interested in doing.

Now, one of the things we’ve talked about a lot is how people with Adult ADHD can “outsource” the things they can’t focus on to other people, using some kind of exchange–payment or barter. However, we do realize that alot of people with Adult ADHD are going to say,

“Okay, great, but Tellman and Stephanie, I can’t just get everything done by outsourcing my entire life. I’m not at that place. I can’t do it financially, there are just some things that I have to get through. I have to pay the bills. I have to take out the garbage–ADHD symptoms or no.”

Those are the two sides to focus, when you’ve got to focus on the things that kind of stink, but you absolutely have to anyway. Now, everyone with Adult ADHD CAN learn to focus even on things they don’t like. However, it’s good to understand that in the long run, while it’s great be able to turn focus on and off on demand, you really want to be developing your natural interests, that you’re able to focus on like crazy.

There are all sorts of different subjects, concepts, ideas, hobbies, and areas of interest that people with Adult ADHD symptoms have all around the world. And when we’re thinking about THOSE things, well then people with Adult ADHD can focus better than anyone around them. They can focus exclusively for hours on end.

That’s what we call hyper-focus, when the Adult ADHD brain becomes so focused that you don’t notice anything else around you. Some people might say you’re spacing out. You’re not spacing out. You’re totally focused like a laser on whatever you’re thinking about. Because you’re interested

in it.

The fact is though, its not really an issue of the topic. This kind of focus is something that you taught yourself, unknowingly–how to turn the hyper-focus on whenever you’re engaged in this particular topic.

But what if you could then learn to turn that hyper-focus on when you need to? What if someone with Adult ADHD symptoms could get their brain firing into focus and turn it on the second they wanted to, for any task?

Woudn’t that be amazing? You’d be like a superhero, with the super-ability of being able to focus like a laser on anything, anytime.

The truth is, its completely learnable, and that is just one of the things we teach people with Adult ADHD everyday in our program. To find out how to switch your natural ADHD symptoms of “hyper-focusing” over to anything you want, see below!

Focus is a very interesting thing. It’s kind of confusing for a lot of people. Sometimes people have focus when they don’t know that they’re focused. Some people just can’t seem to focus. Some people find that they’re focusing on the wrong things, and not the things they want to focus on. It’s difficult to measure.

Focus is a concept. It’s very difficult to say, “I’m focused” right? Versus, “I’m not focused,” because it’s very, very subjective. Where’s the focus scale? How much does it weigh if you’re very focused? The concept is very personal. One person’s focus is another person’s distraction, and you really need to take these ideas into consideration when you’re talking about putting these principles and techniques into practice.

It’s good to develop a skill to turn focus on and off on demand, but you really want to be developing your natural areas that you’re able to focus in on like crazy. I’m talking about hyper-focus, when you really get into that zone where you literally can work on a project, be thinking about something, be reading a book, be watching a TV show, or be engrossed in a conversation about a topic, where you’ll forget to eat or where you’ll completely miss an appointment because you’re so focused on what you were into or working on.

When you’re working with this principle, technique, or concept, you have to remember that it’s a conscious choice in the beginning.

Let’s talk about doing dishes. I hate doing dishes and just can’t focus on the task. I have hated doing dishes from the time I was a very small child. My parents will tell you plenty of stories about me getting distracted away from doing dishes. To this day, I still don’t enjoy doing dishes, and I do my absolute best to outsource it to whoever is eating dinner with me at the time. But sometimes you just have to do the dishes. So, how do you get the dishes done?

I’m going to give you some tricks, and please remember, what we’re talking about here isn’t dishes specifically. It’s focus. What we’re talking about is your own dirty dishes. Whatever it is that’s like dirty dishes for you-maybe it’s your homework, if you’re in school; paying the bills is a very common one; getting your taxes organized in advance. There are some basic things that you can do to focus, that you can modify and plug in to whatever it is that you have to do on a regular basis, that you just don’t want to do.

Before I do the dishes, I make myself a nice pot of coffee. The second thing I do when I want to get a household chore done at high speed (because I’m a distance runner and love running), I actually get into my running clothes, shoes, shorts, and shirt, and do the dishes at high speed while dressed up like a runner. It’s kind of a funny sight, but it works. It works really well. Or, whatever religion you are, you can somehow incorporate that into what you’re doing. There are lots of very powerful ways to simply connect things that interest you, and include them in what you’re doing to focus and make what you hate to do less like work.

It’s very interesting the way this works. If you’re diagnosed or not diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, it doesn’t matter. We’re talking about your mental habits. If you need more help focusing, put some of these practices and concepts into action. A linear person focuses on one thing. Their emotions get balanced. They’re able to think ahead, plan ahead, and do things in sequence. That’s pretty good for focusing on one task at a time, such as doing the dishes. It’s a very monotonous, step-by-step kind of thing.

The ADD-type person focuses on one thing, and generally what happens, unless you’re able to hyper-focus, as we discussed earlier, your brain literally shuts down. The part of your brain that is in control of doing things in sequence, planning ahead, and doing things in order literally shuts down. The activity in your brain just goes “plop,” and what happens is your brain starts looking for other things to stimulate it so it can stay active, except it’s going on randomizer now, meaning it will just soak up whatever’s coming into your senses.

The point here is if you feed your senses with things that are related to what you’re trying to accomplish, you’ll stay focused on accomplishing that thing.
There are all sorts of different ways that you can play with this in your life.

If you have ADD or ADHD, you may have the tendency to see yourself in a negative light. Don’t do that! Don’t focus on the bad things. Turn ADD traits around and see them in a positive light. When you do that, you’ll be a happier person with a happier life. Let me show you how…

First, one characteristic associated with ADD is “impulsivity.” So? You think fast on your feet. And when you’re able to think fast in a critical situation and make a quick decision, then you’re not impulsive. You’re decisive! Imagine a big stock buy that your company might be considering. The price is low, but something happened to make the stock start to climb. The instant you see this, you make a fast analysis of the situation, and bang! You buy the stock and make the company 10 million dollars. Your decisiveness just made the day. Be careful about weighing factors involved, though. Buying a Ferrari on a whim isn’t a very good idea. In our stock buying case, you saw something that signaled an upward movement and the buy was a smart thing to do.

That’s part of your ADD, too. You notice changes in the environment because you notice everything around you. Some say that’s “distractibility,” but in the case of noticing a small change, it was totally positive that you noticed. People who are surveillance people or systems managers need to be aware of small changes, too. In those cases, what society calls, “Distractibility,” can be a good thing.

Hyperactivity can be good, too. You’re full of life and energy, and can really get a project done fast when you turn on the ADD “hyperfocus” jets. Imagine that you have this deadline and your job is on the line. You’ll sure see hyperfocus as a great thing when you meet the deadline and save your job, right? The only drawback to this is that you may tend to ignore your own well-being. Remember to work, eat, and rest, too. You aren’t very much fun to be around when you’re cranky, anyway.

Yet, you are a likable person, no doubt. You’re so creative that you’re always coming up with interesting ideas and things to do. So many non-ADD people have boring jobs and boring lives. They just forget how to have a good time. Not you! You probably have a kick-butt sense of humor and really make the party come to life. However, use your ability to detect small changes when it comes to relationships, too. Generally, non-ADD people don’t quite understand attention deficit and may have been put off by something you said or did, when you never meant to hurt their feelings at all. Iron out miscommunications quickly and you’ll rock.

Don’t let what people “label” you put you down. You’re awesome! When you start to throw off the negatives and see yourself in a positive light, you’ll be a much happier person and your life will be happier, too.

In our last articles we discussed finding a way for you to get more money and how this works when you have attention deficit. But number one, you’ve got to know how much more money you want. It’s not okay just to say, “I need more money.” How much more money do you need? That way, you can figure out whom you’re going to target to get what you need.

If you’re in a business where you sell a product, or you sell service by the hour, let’s say if you need $1,000 more dollars a month and you charge $100 an hour, it’s very simple math to figure out that you need 10 more clients. But finding them and the money you need doesn’t need to bring on your ADD anxiety.

Actually, ADD blends well with this situation because you can make a game of getting where you need to be by saying, “If I need 10 more clients, I bet if I find 100 prospects I’ll get 10 clients.”

Now if you make a game out of finding 100 people that you might be able to impress, or at least find something that will get yourself remembered, and then it’s simply a numbers game. All you can do from there, which is so much fun as well, is say, “Let’s see if I can get these new clients in three weeks,” and you make it a game. You use your capabilities of attention deficit to make it fun, number one, and to make it into a game-a challenge. People with ADD love a challenge.

Number two, be persistent, and people with ADD are very persistent. We have the ability to go, not even an extra mile, but ten miles just to make something happen. These qualities of attention deficit can work for you immediately.

The whole point of this part of our series is to get you to stop thinking about what you don’t have and to start thinking about what you want.

There are places that you can look at online to find the information you need. You can go to any of the job websites, like Monster or CareerBuilder, to can post your resume. I would highly recommend that you do something interesting, because of the ADD low threshold for boredom.

Number two, is you can go to a website called Elance, if you’re a service provider. Here, you’re bidding on a job. Be careful not to bid lower than everyone else because you need to get paid to do what you want to do. It’s a way of matching yourself up with people who are looking for your skill set and are willing to pay for it. You may need a bit of the ADD persistence here, too, but keep at it.

But if you’re not a contractor and are looking for a better job, here are some tips:

*Get noticed by doing something unusual. For instance, use a picture of a pair of socks and caption it, “If you hire me, I’ll knock your socks off.” Of course, that’s been going around a while and a lot of people have already seen it, so think of something similar and something in line with your own personality. Use your ADD creativity!

*Write a paragraph in the same “voice” as the company you’re targeting. Study their annual report or other literature to figure out what that is. The paragraph should detail your leadership qualities and your ADD ability to solve problems. Put this at the top of your resume. Remember, you only get about 30 seconds to make an impression.

*If possible, email your resume, but paste it into the body of your email, rather than sending an attachment. Attachments sometimes carry viruses and can be snatched by the antivirus or spam filter.

*Don’t use your accomplishments as the organizing factor

*Don’t use special fonts, bold, italics or other special characters. You want to look professional, not flashy.

These are loose guidelines, and you can find much more information online about preparing a resume. Use your ADD tenacity to ferret out the best information. Sites like SmartMoney, Monster, and CareerBuilder have lots of tips for you.

The most important thing about finding the money you need is to use your ADD creativity and persistence and make it fun, so your attention deficit won’t make you bored. The key is: Don’t drop the ball, until you have what you want!
