Statistics about ADHD paint a pretty bleak picture. It has been generally accepted that diagnosis of ADHD has increased drastically in recent years. When you take a look at the actual numbers, that increase becomes clearer and with it the need for alternatives to traditional treatment, since the drawbacks of using certain medications has become known.

The Centers for Disease Control conducted a range of studies in the early 2000’s and the results show the growing number of cases of ADHD among children. Specifically, ADHD stats indicate that 4.5 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADHD and boys are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed as girls.

The increase in diagnosis reflected in statistics about ADHD highlights the need for alternative forms of treatment, especially given the fact that ADHD is significantly more prevalent among poor children. Lack of access to prescription drugs and their lack of effectiveness at treating the condition leave many parents seeking other forms of treatment. The potentially serious side effects of Ritalin and other stimulant based meds prescribed for ADHD only add to the uncertainty about their use.

Fortunately, concerned parents now have several avenues which they can consider for treatment. As ADHD stats reflect the growing number of diagnosis, finding ways to control symptoms and bring relief to affected children becomes more urgent. Among the alternatives to traditional treatment are behavioral therapy, dietary adjustments and natural remedies.

Natural remedies represent a particularly hopeful advance as they target not just surface symptoms but their underlying cause as well. With statistics about ADHD showing cases cropping up across various regions and income levels, anything that can be used to achieve positive results without exposing children to side effects or costing an exorbitant amount of money is encouraging.

Made from herbs including Hyoscyamus, Tuberculinum and Arsen iod, natural remedies help to soothe agitation and balance neurotransmitter levels, improving brain function. Unlike traditional medications, this provides long term results which can help kids and adults to live life normally and counteract the growing statistics about ADHD by opening the door to healing and change.

Using behavioral therapy to recognize and change automatic responses to various situations can also be extremely helpful to children and adults with ADHD. The ability to take some control over their own behavior can be empowering to ADHD patients. Dietary adjustments can also help as statistics about ADHD also indicate that the condition can be directly tied to improper nutrition. By getting a balanced diet, patients can see a marked improvement in symptoms as their brain function improves.

The numbers are pretty clear when it comes to ADHD stats, but with the increase in diagnosis comes an increased awareness of the symptoms and their cause. This has led to improvements in treatment, including the use of natural remedies. So if ADHD is a part of your life, don’t let the numbers get you down. You can stop being a statistic and get back into living your life by making the natural choice for ADHD treatment.

Laura Ramirez has done extensive research on using natural remedies and ADHD stats.

The human brain is one of the most complex aspects of the human body and it is still a puzzle for the medical practitioners and researchers. Mental or neurological disorders can affect anyone and at anytime. An individual can suffer from a mental disorder at any stage in life and the reason for it can be anything or even nothing at all. Thus in case of ADHD too, it is the same condition. Adult ADHD is a growing disease today.

More about Adult ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD is said to be mainly affecting children or adolescents. However even adults can suffer from this situation and can be victims of ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD are inattentiveness, high impulsiveness, highly hyperactive and restless. ADHD can affect adults at any stage in life. Adults ADHD is difficult to diagnose as it is mistaken as a result of a stressful life. However if the individual shows the symptoms for a majority part of his life it means that he is suffering from ADHD.

How to recognize ADHD among adults?

To confirm that adults suffer from ADHD the following factors must be considered:

1.Adults suffering from ADHD can have difficulties in winding up a project or a given task once the difficult part of the project is completed.

2.The individual has trouble in the organization and time management necessary for a project or a task.

3.A person suffering from ADHD tends to forget his appointments and obligations.

4.An individual suffering from ADHD has trouble in sitting in one place for a long time and fidgets and squirms in his seat if he has to do so.

5.Sometimes he gets so hyperactive that he tends to do things very fast and without much thought behind it.

Coping with ADHD

There are several ways in which adults can cope with ADHD. Psychologists, psychiatrists and doctors have designed special ways to treat adult ADHD. The following are few of the ways in which Adult ADHD can be treated:

1.Special counseling by professional psychologists and psychiatrists.

2.Different coping and skill strategies developed for treating adult ADHD.

3.Professional psychologists advise behavior modifications, coaching and therapy and a combination of these factors.

4.Treatment is customized for each patient.

5.The psychologist or the psychiatrist first determines the degree and nature of the ADHD among the individual.

6.The physician then determines the treatment according to the symptoms of ADHD among the individual.

7.The treatment involves monitoring the symptoms and treatment and medicinal effects on the individual with respect to his work, domestic and social life and his level of performance in every field.

Conclusion:

Thus this proves that it is not necessary that only children suffer from ADHD. Individuals above the age of 18 to suffer from it and that Adult ADHD is very much prevalent.

This type of ADHD has six or more symptoms listed in the DSM-IV for Psychiatric disorders in both hyperactivity and inattention. This is the most severe type of ADHD, and it is the most difficult to treat. You will need to spend alot of extra time with your child if he/she has this type of ADHD.

In the category of hyperactivity/impulsivity, an individual must have six or more of the following symptoms: often fidgets while sitting, often leaves seat in structure setting, often runs around inappropriately (restlessness), often has trouble playing quietly, often talks excessively, often blurts out answers before question completed, often has difficulty waiting turn and often interrupts or intrudes on others. Some of these symptoms must have present before the age of seven, and they must have lasted for at least six months. The DSM-IV Psychiatric disorders defines these criteria. You should have your child tested if you believe that he or she has these symptoms as described above.

In the category of inattention, an individual must have six or more of the following symptoms: often makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work and other activities, often has difficulty keeping attention sustained in task or play activities, often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly, often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities, often avoids and dislikes tasks that require sustained mental effort, often loses things that are necessary for everyday life, often is easily distracted by extraneous stimuli and often is forgetful in daily activities. Some of these symptoms must have been present before the age of seven, and they must have lasted at least six months. This is also defined in the DSM-IV manual for Psychiatric disorders.

The combined type of ADHD is actually the most common among ADHD sufferers. They are also the individuals most at risk for other negative problems in their lives due to the nature of the disorder. First of all, children with Combined Type ADHD have higher rates of conduct disorder (Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder). Also, they have higher rates of bipolar disorder, another Psychiatric disorder.. As a while, children and adults with combined type area at a higher risk for other psychiatric disorders. Parents who have a child with this type must be extremely vigilant in the care of their children. They really must constantly be on the lookout for problems in other arenas of their lives besides specific symptoms of ADHD. As a side note, speaking to a medical professional from the outset can minimize any chance that your child will experience difficulties in their lives. Just keep in mind that problems in the emotional, psychological and social domains are a result of a response to having ADHD, and not the disorder itself.

As your child with Combined Type ADHD reaches their teenage years and into young adulthood, they will be at a higher risk for many things such as illegal drug use, general illegal activities, overdrinking and other activities of concern. Raising your child will involve more dedication and vigilance in all areas. You must spend the time to help your child or children with this disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a mental condition found in some children all over the world. A child with ADHD can be hyperactive, totally inattentive and impulsive at times. However, to label every child who demonstrates the above traits as with ADHD is highly inaccurate.

Children being children will be hyperactive, impulsive at times in some situations. A child may also seem to be inattentive, it could be because, and he doesn’t want to pay attention. A look at the ADHD statistical data will convey an alarming trend; however, assumption is also a large contributor to this figure. To be fair, let us not put a child in ADHD care just out of a need to control the child.

ADHD is a disease that starts right from the childhood. It usually changes how a child behaves, think, and feel. The ADHD children are generally very restless. Nearly all children suffering from this disease are overactive and lacking concentration at times.

The children have poor concentration in their study have a weak memory, impulsiveness athey are in a hurry to do everything, generally lack self prestige Weak short term memory and they suffer from some abnormal sleep and appetite problems.

Diagnosis & treatment

Left untreated, ADHD can adversely affect the wellbeing and development of a child and his or her family. Childhood, being the platform on which rest of the life is built, a child with untreated ADHD could have behavioral problems carried into adulthood.

Such a child could also be emotionally weak, besides being a laggard in studies

ADHD is diagnosed during primary school years.Symptons may be seen by the age of six .It is not easy to diagnose this condition as the symptoms might overlap the natural behaviour of a child. However, as mentioned above, the most telltale leads are Hyperactivity, consistent impulsive actions, and disruptive and un attentiveness.

While the causes of ADHD are still being understood, a genetic element may also be involved. There are different therapies, rather than treatments for ADHD. It must be mentioned here that an ADHD child is not completely abnormal all the time, does behave as a normal play child but can have bouts of such extreme behaviour.

Treatment of ADHD is in accordance with the type of behaviour predominantly displayed.Treatment includes psychosocial and educational programmes as well as medication, in some cases. It would be very useful to seek help of teachers to understand the child’s condition better and arrive at better diagnosis.

More than the treatment, a child with ADHD needs support, understanding and love and thanks to the various awareness programs for parents and teachers, the ADHD child can also look forward to being a national asset.

Saying my ADHD son doesn’t wake up well would be like saying Old Faithful is a pretty big geyser. This child, age 10 and with severe ADHD, wakes up like a rock.

Morning has always been a difficult time for us, even before the ADHD diagnosis. He whines. He grumbles. He shrieks. He goes back to bed. It’s like having two of me in the house!

I have come up with a morning routine that takes into account his ADHD and the fact that he’s not only tired and grumpy but hasn’t had his ADHD medication yet. This routine might not work for everyone, but maybe you can use it as a starting point for a routine with your ADHD child. The main thing, I think, is to have a routine.

Before I wake my ADHD son, I start the shower and put his clothes on the bed where they’re easy to find. I wake the ADHD monster, usher him into the bathroom, and wait.

If I don’t hear him get in the shower after a couple of minutes, I go in and prod him. I know his ADHD makes him distractible and he’s more than half-asleep. After a few minutes of shower time I urge him to finish up, then I tell him when time’s up.

Even with ADHD, my son does a pretty good job of taking his own shower most of the time. Sometimes he has shampoo in his hair when he gets out, but usually he’s clean.

Because of his ADHD, he doesn’t sleep well, or enough. He catches up on his sleep on the weekends. So during the week I let him put his clothes on and get back in bed for 15-20 minutes before he brushes his teeth, takes his ADHD medication, and puts on his shoes and socks.

While Jack’s back in bed catching up on ADHD-deprived sleep, I get his sister in and out of the shower and dressed.

When it’s time to brush teeth and take ADHD medicine, I wake Jack again, usher him back into the bathroom, and lay out his medicine and toothbrush. I stand there as much to make sure he brushes his teeth (he forgets) as to make sure he takes his ADHD meds. Then he puts on shoes and socks and gets ready for the bus.

When I make Jack’s lunch, I fix him a “snack baggie” of dry cereal, usually frosted shredded wheat. I put this in the top of his lunch bag and he eats it on the bus. This makes up for the fact that my ADHD son can’t wake up enough for breakfast.

Again, this routine may not work for everyone with an ADHD child. But the point is to have a routine. It’s what helps my son get up and get going every morning, in spite of his ADHD.

If you think your child may have ADHD, you will want to get a proper diagnosis from a qualified medical practitioner, child psychologist or pediatrician. Stay way from your family doctor if you know that he he has very little experience of ADHD. He or she is hardly the best person to decide on a diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.

The first epic mistake is choosing a specialist or pediatrician who does not have a proven record in ADHD. There is no handy test which will definitely clinch a diagnosis. You should be aware that there are various questionnaires that are used and the Connors Rating Scale is the most common one. You should ask the specialist if he is referring to the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV manual which has been issued by the American Psychiatric Association. Print off a copy of the fact sheet from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention website. It is a handy guide. Make sure that the specialist has eliminated other conditions which could mimic ADHD, such as allergy, seizures, low blood sugar levels, spinal problems or vision and hearing problems just to mention a few.In this way you can be much more involved in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD for your child.

According to a report in USA To-Day, we are now at almost 40 million prescriptions for ADHD mind altering drugs and they have risen by as much as 40% in the last 5 years ! So the second epic mistake to avoid is to accept this type of medication without doing your homework on whether it is really suitable for your child. You will need to find out about side effects such as loss of appetite, stunted growth and irritability. There are risks involved for children with heart conditions, or who have a history of depression. Not only that but recent studies now show that after a period of about a year, the drugs are no longer as effective as they should be.

Most medical authorities, including the WHO (World Health Organisation) are concerned that there is too much emphasis on medication with psychostimulants whose effects on the child’s brain are not known at all in the long term. They are now recommending that ADHD behavior therapy should be the first choice for parents and doctors. You will need to investigate ADHD homeopathic remedies as well so that you have an open mind and then make an informed decision. It is only be doing this that the the parent can take an active role in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD as it directly affects their own child.

The third epic mistake is to accept from a school teacher or headmaster that your child should be on medication! Apart from the fact these people are not doctors, there is no need for this interference and very often, these people are totally unaware of the side effects of the drugs. It is all very well for them to recommend that the child be sent for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD but really their efforts should be confined to making the school environment the best possible one for your child and not pretend to be doctors! If they concentrated more on classroom behavior therapy which ideally should fit in with your own behaviour code at home, then this will be the best possible road to take.

Natural remedies for ADHD are a rapidly expanding treatment area as people look toward natural and holistic approaches to treat various conditions.

As a doctor who treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD), and as the mother of a son with ADHD, I am interested in anything that may ease the suffering of children and adults.

Thus far I have heard some positive anecdotal reports from families on my caseload regarding the natural interventions listed below.

While I am supportive of natural and herbal approaches, they are most effective when used in conjunction with other treatment interventions such as behavioral therapy, exercise, and ADHD diets.

Natural Remedies For ADHD: Herbs

1. Chamomile is an herb that has been used for thousands of years. It is primarily noted for its soothing and calming effect and is safe for children. In addition, it tastes good and can be ingested in multiple ways. It is easily available in tea or capsule form.

2. Red Clover Blossom is a relaxant as well as a detoxifying agent. It has no adverse side effects if used as directed and is easily available in tea form.

3. Kava kava is an herb that originates from the Pacific Islands that offers natural stress and anxiety relief. In addition, it may also aid focus and concentration.

4. Brahmi is an herb/plant that originates from India. It is used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as a nerve and brain tonic that helps destroy free radicals. It has no side effects if used as directed. Internationally it is prescribed by many doctors to specifically treat ADD/ADHD.

5. Ginkgo Biloba. Ginkgo increases blood flow to the brain, and increases neurotransmitter levels which can improve focus.

6. Scuttelaria (also known as Skullcap)

7. Gotu Kola. Gotu Kola is a natural ingredient that has been shown to reduce anxiety and enhance memory and brain function. Recent research has also suggested that it helps to increase blood flow to the brain and improve general circulation.

8. Avena Sativa (Oatstraw)

9. Rooibos

10. Lemon Balm

11. Valerian

12. Lobelia

13. Hawthorn

14. St. John’s Wort, a proven mood and brain enhancer.

Natural Remedies For ADHD: Supplements

- Vitamin B6 – boosts the central nervous system.

- Iron – Research indicates that iron deficiency is associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children.

- Magnesium – Magnesium is deficiency has been implicated in ADD/ADHD.

- Zinc – Zinc deficiency is also associated with severity of ADHD symptoms.

- Di-Methyl Glycine

- Glycine

- GABA Powder – GABA pathways in the brain appear to play a role in certain cognitive disorders like ADHD.
