Filmed and edited by Ramón J. Goñi New York / BBC News news.bbc.co.uk A new study suggests that Transcendental Meditation could help to increase brain function and lower stress. Fifty students took part in the trial at the American University in Washington DC, and after ten weeks of meditation they reported feeling more alert and said they coped better in difficult situations. Research into the health claims made for meditation has limitations and few conclusions can be reached, but indications suggest that meditation may have a measurable impact on the brain. Josh Goldberg took part in the study at the American University and claims it has helped to get him off a cocktail of drugs he was taking to control Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). If you give your child a healthy balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, fewer carbohydrates and more protein, then there is no need to supplement this diet with the so-called ADHD alternative vitamins. But let’s say that your child cannot get all this healthy food or that your family routine does not permit such a luxury, then here are the ADHD alternative vitamins you should go for.
The main vitamin groups, A, B ,C and D are all important for the development of the body and the brain. Lots of studies have shown that ADHD kids had an insufficient quantity of Vitamin D which is particularly important for the functioning of the brain. This was the result of a study done at the Children’s Hospital in Oakland CA. Other studies support this and Vitamin D is regarded as a vital element in helping the brain to function normally and that will mean, improved concentration, less impulsivity and better focus.
Vitamin C together with flaxseed oil was fund to be very effective in one study done on a group of children who suffered from hyperactivity and restlessness. As Vitamin C is essential for many bodily and cognitive functions, it is one of the most popular ADHD alternative vitamins.
Although the famous essential fatty acids (EFAs) are not strictly alternative vitamins for ADHD, they nevertheless have come out very well on all the studies done on ADHD children. These are the famous Omega 3 and Omega 6 which are found in fish, olive oil and flaxseed oil.
The above mentioned vitamins are the most important of the ADHD alternative vitamins as they really do affect the central nervous system by enhancing the production of the neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. The correct functioning of these will ensure that our moods are stable, our impulses are checked and we can improve concentration. A good multivitamin is one of the best ways to provide your child with the essential alternative vitamins for ADHD.
If your child is on ADHD medication, ADHD alternative vitamins will NOT be a substitute for that. Neither will they cure ADHD but they will go a long way to help in alleviating ADHD symptoms such as restlessness and fidgeting and helping concentration. You will need to find a reputable supplier where there is a guarantee of the purity and safety of the ingredients. This goes also for a ADHD homeopathic cure which is now widely regarded as a valid alternative to ADHD medication as there are no risks or side effects.

Is this you ? You don\’t know where to turn for help for ADHD child who seems to spend most of his waking life bouncing off the walls, kicking, screaming and generally being impossible. I have even heard of some parents who were bitten by their children and had bite marks on their arms . So, where do you turn to for help for ADHD ? Here are five practical things to do before you give yourself up to the mental health authorities !
1. There are thousands of ADHD websites where you can get help. I googled \’ADHD blogs\’ this morning and got 12,000 results. For \’ADHD forums\’ I got a mere 48,000. Help for ADHD is available twenty fours a day. Here you can find discussions which range from medications, ADHD diagnosis, ADHD diet and nutrition, just to name a few. You can also pick up some great parenting tips as well. Look out for \’Big Pharm\’ sites who will give you a biased picture — look for ADHD alternative remedies as well.
2. If you are unsure whether your child has ADHD, wait until he or she is six years old before going for a diagnosis. Very often the kindergarten teacher will have noticed some odd behaviour which contrasts sharply with the other kids and she will alert you to the fact. Just because a kid rocks from side to side and spends most of his time jumping on the furniture like a cat does not necessarily mean he has ADHD. Being optimistic, you might not need help for ADHD at all.
3. Kids (and adults!) can be allergic to certain foods, smells and toxins which can be all around the house. A very practical thing is to buy a good air purifier, water purifier and get the best possible filters (Hepa filters) for your vacuum cleaner. You may not have solved your ADHD help problem but you already a cleaner, healthier environment in which you can breathe.
4. Kids need lots of green time — research has even shown that exercise in a green area is far superior than dragging a kid round the shopping mall. Organising outdoor exercise ( you don\’t have to it yourself) is a great way to burn off extra energy and if you can be there with them you get an extra bonus in bonding with your child. Hyperactive children cannot go on for ever.
5. Food colourings are out and the EU and the UK have already passed legislation so that they will be banned from food by 2010. Already Maryland is proposing a similar law as there is enough evidence to show that there is a definite link between attention and behaviour disorders and these colourings. So, out with processed foods and junk food and in with organic fresh food.
Help for ADHD is readily available ad maybe there is too much of it. A lot of the sites I mentioned above will be sponsored by the drugs industry who are looking after a goldmine. You are probably scared about the effects of ADHD medications and how they will impact on your child. These ADHD help sites will play down the side effects of psychostimulants but you should also know that there ARE alternative ADHD treatments which are completely safe and non-addictive. Join the thousands of wiser parents who will not be brainwashed by the drugs industry by clicking on the link below.

Most people believe that there are just three types of ADHD. Now that has become six as more and more is being discovered about this disorder. Type 5 is known as limbic ADHD and basically this is the classic ADHD symptoms together with depression, low energy levels and minimum motivation. Limbic ADHD treatment will vary from other types of ADHD treatment as the depression symptoms together with a sense of hopelessness can complicate matters.
It is possible that many more cases of limbic ADHD exist as it is now calculated that 25% of ADHD cases may also have depression symptoms, so this type may be much more common than was thought. The patient has to cope with the classic symptoms of inattention, distractability together with apathy, low self esteem and insomnia. The limbic area of the brain controls our emotions, moods and motivation. The good news is that ADHD natural remedies can help the patient to be more focused and lift the mood as well.
What is the best limbic ADHD treatment to opt for? Inevitably there is great debate about this and the experts rarely agree. No surprises there ! Some recommend Welburtin which is one of the most widely used anti-depressants on the market. Others recommend psychostimulants (Ritalin, Focalin and Conecrta) but they should be given in small doses. I know some experts who treat this disorder with both an anti-depressant and a psychostimulant.
A Chinese herb known as Huperzia serrata or Huperzine A is being studied in clinical trials at Harvard University. It has been found to be beneficial for those suffering from epilepsy, Alzheimers and also those suffering from limbic ADHD. More research needs to be done.
Another limbic ADHD treatment recommended by some experts is how to develop relaxation techniques together with management of stress and organisational skills.
There is little doubt now that a multi-faceted treatment approach is the best one for ADHD and limbic ADHD is no exception. This favours exercise, diet, supplements, school and parental support along with medication. But which medication? ADHD meds have had a stormy ride due to some very alarming side effects and also due to the fact that they do NOT cure ADHD and are not effective in the long term. Much better to take the multi-faceted approach and substitute mind altering drugs with ADHD natural remedies Limbic ADHD can be managed just as successfully by opting for this type of treatment.
