When loved ones are struggling with the world around them it’s difficult to know what to do, particularly if you cannot understand the source of their problems.

While understanding may not solve the issues, it can go a long way toward healing relationships and building a good foundation for treatment. Proper diagnosis and education on the facts of any behavioral disorder will drastically increase the chances of your loved one thriving rather than just surviving.

Two Disorders With Two Different Causes

Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are often confused because of symptoms that on the surface seem quite similar. Children, teenagers and adults all have the potential to suffer from ODD or ADHD, making their lives and the lives of their families much more difficult.
In order to fully grasp what issues your child or spouse might be facing you need to look at what behaviors their disorder compels them to act upon and what motivates them initially.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Everyone at some point in their lives has experienced what are called “oppositional feelings”. Moments where you really don’t care about the consequences of your actions, you just want to argue with someone in a position of authority. Maybe it was during your rebellious teen years or maybe at some other point in time, but you were angry, negative, generally feeling hostile and wanting to ‘take it out’ on the entire world.

This is how someone with ODD feels almost all the time.

Moody and argumentative, children and adults suffering from ODD will throw temper tantrums on a consistent basis, refuse to follow rules, blame others for their mistakes, act aggressive, spiteful and vindictive, will annoy peers deliberately, will argue with anyone in a position of authority, are touchy and will often use foul language. Due to these outbursts and negative behaviors people with ODD usually have few or no friends.

Anyone suffering from ODD is distressed and in need of help, just as those who are dealing with the consequences of these extremely disruptive behaviors, need professional help and guidance to cope.

The symptoms of ODD do NOT respond to medication – if there are other underlying disorders these may be treated pharmacologically. Instead physicians generally prescribe Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Family Training Programs.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

In contrast to ODD, children and adults suffering from ADHD are generally not angry but frustrated by information overload. ADHD sufferers want to be good students or employees; they want to follow directions and feel very bad if they find themselves in trouble with others. Unfortunately they are often in trouble because of impulsive behavior, inattention or hyperactivity.

ADHD affects the way the brain receives and interprets information and stimulus from the outside world. Thoughts, images, sights, sounds and smells race through the mind at lightning speed and overwhelm the ADHD sufferer. Unable to focus on any one specific thing it leads to disorganization, time-management problems, procrastination and inattention. Hyperactivity and impulse control problems also affect some ADHDers and cause them to struggle in school and work situations. Those who are overwhelmed with ADHD shut down emotionally from time to time. Many ADHDers have been accused of laziness because of their physical need for downtime.

ADHD can be treated with medication. Physicians often prescribe a stimulant medication to help the brain focus while patients learn skills to combat behavioral problems.

Despite their issues ADHDers are usually happy, show empathy, remorse and get along well with peers and younger people.

Proper diagnosis of your loved ones behavioral disorder is the only way to receive proper care.

It is very common to have a learning disability along with ADHD. In fact, research shows that thirty percent of people with ADHD also have a learning disability. Beyond learning disabilities, over fifty percent of individuals with ADHD have some other type of brain-based disorder. This is why depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder and other similar disorders are higher than normal in ADD clients.

One type of learning disability that almost every person with ADD will have is an integrative processing deficit. This is the ability to take in information, process it quickly and make use of it. Most people with ADD are either slower than others in doing this or have trouble doing it at all. It is not that they do not understand the information, but conflicting signals will make it difficult to fully process.

Another common learning disability in people with ADHD is working memory problems. Working memory is another term for short term memory, or information that is told to you in the moment. This can affect information you hear, read, etc. Working memory is important for doing well academically and in your work.

Another learning disability that is common in ADHD clients is problems with visual/spatial processing. This is not too surprising since most people with ADHD have problems with organizing space. Academically, this will affect subjects such as geometry and physics.

Other common learning disabilities are dyslexia, reading comprehension, arithmetic reasoning, oral expression, written expression, foreign language acquisition, syntactic processing and most likely other learning disabilities. This is why getting a thorough examination at the start is so important. An individual may be dealing with ADHD, but he or she may be dealing with a learning disability as well. And though you cannot directly do anything about a learning disability, it is good to know you have one and how it affects your ability to function. Also, you may receive academic accommodations as well as job accommodations if diagnosed with an LD.

In order to find out if you have a learning disability, it will be necessary to go through a lengthy set of tests that compare and contrast your IQ, personality and interests. If you do significantly better on one aspect of a test than another, this could signify a learning disability. For example, if you do really well on the verbal part of your IQ test and not so well on the visual/spatial section of the IQ test, you may have a learning disability.

It is not known exactly why ADD often comes with some type of learning disability. Most likely, the atypical wiring of an ADDer has something to do with it. New research is being done every day on the brain and how it works, and science definitely does not have all the answers to these questions yet.

When it comes to counseling and ADHD, anything is better than nothing. Some courses of treatment will most likely be more helpful than others, but talking about one’s problems will help ease the feelings of being alone that ADDers tend to have. All therapy will work better if the individual is on medication and has been educated about their disorder. This article will be just aq small part of the education you require in order to deal with ADHD or someone close to you with ADHD.

When it comes to treatment, the first outlet you want to seek is a psychiatrist or psychologist trained in diagnosing attention deficit disorder. Get a clear diagnosis for your child or for yourself. Know what you are dealing with and go from there. After a diagnosis has been made, the doctor will prescribe medication and most likely counseling as well. Some doctors will be more knowledgeable than others about the disorder, and it will be to your benefit to find someone that is. Do some of your own research just to see what is out there for resources in your area. A wealth of information is offered by the author of this article.

Psychotherapy is often necessary for individuals with ADD for various reasons. Some people do not have many issues after they are diagnosed, get some kind of medication as well as education about their disorder. Others have been living for years with the disorder without even knowing it. This will cause a lot of problems for the individual, and their path will be much more complex. Self-esteem will most likely be low in these individuals after years of not achieving what they know they can. Relationships have been affected by the previously unknown disorder, and the individual has to rework their entire life. It is not a simple process, and can be quite painful. It is necessary in counseling to learn how to structure goals and plans, but reconstructing self concept is just as important. The balance of these two intermingling goals can be difficult for the therapist to employ. You will want to seek out an experienced therapist for the best results.

The complexity of ADD and the psychological problems that can come with it make it essential that the therapist is very familiar in dealing with ADD. It will be of no help to the client if their therapist knows less than they do about their disorder. This will only reinforce their low self esteem and deep feelings of being misunderstood.

Group therapy can also be very helpful to individuals with ADD. ADDers thrive off group support and really like the feeling of being understood and belonging. It would be ideal to find a group for people with ADD, but if none exists there are other similar groups that will help. There are national organizations that deal solely with ADD such as CHADD, and there are local chapters across the country. All you need to do is hop online and see which group is near you.

For many years, ADHD was thought to be a child disorder, and more specifically a disorder only found in young boys. But with medical technology and research evolving, it has been found that many children with ADD do not grow out of it when they become adults. Although some of the hyperactivity tends to decrease, the core symptoms of the disorder do not disappear. Hyperactivity can turn into impulsivity in adulthood, which can potentially be very destructive.

92 percent of adults diagnosed with ADHD who were treated after age 18 wish they had been diagnosed sooner, according to research done by Harris Interactive surveys. Research also indicated that 90 percent of teachers felt that late diagnosis affected both academic and social development in students.

Families of people with ADD believe that getting an accurate diagnosis is very important, but that conflicting information prevents this from happening in many cases. Media from drug companies such as the one pushing the popular ADD drug Strattera contribute to this misinformation. Internet links that supposedly indicate ADD also contribute to misinformation. ADD is not something you can diagnose just by taking a simple quiz or survey. It must be diagnosed by a psychologist or psychiatrist, and even these visits should involve some type of formal testing for the disorder.

Before recently, many adults with ADHD were called unmotivated or lazy. One thing to keep in mind is that just because you have some of the symptoms does mean you have the disorder. It is the severity of the symptoms and the history of them in the individual that is the tell tale sign. What you need to keep in mind is that a disorder by definition is something that gets in the way. So, if you have symptoms that get in the way of every day life, please go get tested and determine what the problem is so that you can get the help you need.

For a diagnosis in adulthood, the symptoms of disorganization, distractibility, impulsivity and lack of long-term planning must have started sometime in childhood. It is hopeful that you would be diagnosed in childhood to head off as many of the problems as possible.

Adults with ADHD can definitely have a successful life, and the disorder has a range of effects on their progress in adulthood. Some individuals with ADHD will have trouble finishing college, some won’t. Some will have trouble finding a job or career they enjoy, some won’t. It depends on many factors: how severe the disorder is, how supportive the individual’s family is, whether secondary disorders mask ADD, etc, etc. Some individuals may have ADD and the field they chose to go into supports their creativity and ideas. Some will have no idea what they want to do and only are concerned with the moment. The bottom line is that if you think you have ADD and it is affecting the quality of your life; see a professional to further investigate your hunches. Medication and counseling can have a huge affect on the quality of your life.

If you even have the smallest idea, go get checked. This disorder is not something to put off treatment to and your quality of life will be much better the sooner you have an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Don’t discount counseling and other therapis. Science has come to understand more about these types of disorders in the past few years and will continue to progress with more and better medications.
