Very good coment! Besides, atwhite, although mentioning important conclusions, i feel, at least in terms of tone, he is overemphasizing the research he’s talking about. Non the less. … I’m glad atwhite took the time to study it and give his explanation here.

    anything published …
anything published in 1999 may have alot of quality info. and i think this guy has alot of bright info, but i think its time to update that info. its probably still all true. but us ADHD people need to be able to use very recent stuff along with older stuff to be able to fight off the stupidity we have to deal with by the uninformed.

im ADD im 14 years old and if i did not take meds or if i was not involed with baseball and friends i would be a wreck. im a B student and a hard worker, ADD people are each different i feel. My friend took meds for ADD and he was a “zoombie”. Yet i take 70mg of adderial and my personality is very outgoing. ADD kids need to brought up quicker i belive. i was brought up in a ” rea life” invoriment and it has helped me in many ways because i am so mature. MEDS DONT HARM THEY HELP!

    You just need ot …
You just need ot give the child plenty of excercise and interesting things to do.
BOREDOM is a major factor is lunatic child dissorder. It was for me, anyway, and i was crazy !
Also, food ! The more sweets and chocolate you feed me, the mor elikely i am to want ot eat the sofa, later on.
Trying to CON me into being wuiet, by giving me such things as drawing books, will make me think you are trying to fool me into being quiet, and make me listen to you less.
ACTION is what i need !

    i “have” add and i …
i “have” add and i think that the medicine just makes a small problem gradualy worsen untill you have to depend on the companies drugs/poison to function properly

THESE TYPES, OF MEDICINE, TURNED, ME ,INTO, A, Z O M B I E. from about 1st grade- 9th1/2 “zombie” is what my teachers told my mom i was like :(

im 15 and in 10th grade. drugs for these types off issues are like listening to music too loud it just makes an easy to solve problem grow and be harder to recover from :(

    I`m wondering what …
I`m wondering what standard the study used to define better? Did it mean sitting sit still & quiet? Or did it mean going from a D & F student to an all A student? Or did it mean a child went from rude & obnoxious in his behavior to very polite and socially pleasant (not calm & quiet that`s a different thing). I think the definition of “better” is very important.

Wow! I have to say …
Wow! I have to say that from my experience, I totally agree with this study. I have a 16 year old son with Aspergers/ADHD/anxiety. He had intense therapy/behavioral intervention as a child and we saw very little improvement in his behavior.
What helped the most was medication.
By the way, atwhite, I think that your outlook will not be as gloomy once your son is older. Maturation is a glorious thing : )

Biga, I gave you a negative, not for your thoughts but for your lack of grammar and spelling. I agree with you but you have to show that we can function like teachers, even without drugs! :-D

cant make it in life with that attitude either. adhd drugs help everyone concentrate, whether ur mentally disabled or not. i dont know wat kind of messed up life ur going for anyway

sounds like a normal kid to me.

  15. bigajosep Says:

if u give ur kid …
if u give ur kid any type of drug to calm them down or make them do better in school ur the worst parent in the world. kids arent supposed to be calm and school is boring. thats why they dont do good in it. anyone could do better with the help of drugs but that doesnt make it right. parents who give their kids add drugs should be put in jail.

    Do you happen to …
Do you happen to know if this study is available on PsycINFO, and the exact title of it? I just searched for it, and found abstracts that cited the MTA (although, none were available in full text, so I couldn’t find the exact reference). I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and am trying to find out as much as I can. I’m a psychology student, but have never studied abnormal psych, so I’m not too familiar with the literature in that area.

  18. Christi543 Says:

    Well, that seems …
Well, that seems predictable given that ADHD is due to a decrease in activity in areas of the prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia, rather than some learned behavior. That’s very interesting, though.

  19. kittypete Says:

    Well, for my …
Well, for my daughter it was a case of her injuring herself and her siblings. She was so hyper that she couldn’t sleep at night, and we found her (3 yrs old at the time) using a butcher knife in the kitchen. At 18 months old she was climbing up bookcases in the middle of the night and screaming cause she couldn’t get down. At 4 yrs. old, she was ready to jump off her windowsill in an attempt to fly. Her safety came first in my decision to use meds.

I remember being assaulted by my second grade teacher for having the gal to tell her that 5-3=-2… IT was her argument that a larger number couldn’t be taken from a smaller number. I refused to be lied to or except a lie as truth so I didn’t back down and was violently shaken and thrown across the room knocking desk out of the way as I flew.

Why can’t these children be themseleves?

  23. fauztran Says:

    I think you’d best …
I think you’d best look into who sponsored the so called “study”. You’ll likely find a conflict of interest.

Drugs, whether legal or not, are bad. To pharmaceutical companies however, they are profit generators. That’s a no brainer.

I tell you all, when the hits the ceiling, I am going to have a chance to duck. When ADHD is outlawed, you and others will be rounded up and imprisoned like Nazis.
