Should people with ADD/ ADHD be medicated?

There are many opinions about medication and ADD/ADHD. Some people believe medication can be very beneficial while others say things such as "It’s the way they were born, and the way they are supposed to be and medication shouldn’t be used to change that" or believe that ritalin is addicting or that ADHD is something people outgrow and adults don’t need meds etc.

I am doing a speech on ADD/ADHD and also re evaluating treatment for my ADHD which I was diagnosed with and put on ritalin for at age 5.

I would greatly appreciate any opinions on this issue, explanations/reasons for why or why not would be great as opposed to one word yes or no answers. Thanks!!

Ritalin works great for me
I take 20 of the sr or whatever in the morning
And 10 @ noon on school days

When I graduate I will quit taking it

But for *now* its more beneficial for me to take it

Concerta is special. (But expensive)
Its made in a way that there is no chance of addiction (in the negative way. Can’t snort it and its extended release so its different)

Yes. Adults can grow out of it.
But its safer for me and my school work
Im a straight A student. But if I didn’t take ritalin I would easily be a c-d person. That’s how it was when I was younger.

Parallel: He/she was born with diabetes/heart disease. It should be left as it is. It seems people only believe that mental illness should be left untreated.

There is a tremendous amount of evidence for adult ADD/ADHD. Many adults take medication for it. Some children outgrow it, some don’t.

Amphetamines can be addictive, as can antianxiety and pain medications. If a medication addresses your problem, potential addiction should not be the first concern. Of course, all medications should be used prudently.

Clearly I support the use of medication for diagnosed ADD/ADHD.
