There are now five types of effective recognized professional treatments for ADD, ADHD, and Autism:
1. Drug treatments: (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, etc). Most of these drugs contain methylphenidate, the same ingredient as “speed” on the street where it’s highly illegal, and addictive to many. They do help education authorities to “control” a child while at school. Some schools even get a subsidy for every Ritalin user. PERHAPS a conflict of interest – YOU THINK? This type of “medication” does NOT “cure” anything. Suppressing symptoms can also suppress potential. In addition, there are many drug side effects and addictions as serious drawbacks to using Ritalin and similar drugs. You can check on these facts if you aren’t convinced about these dangers at:
http://ADHD-biofeedback.com/ritalin.html
2. Allergy treatments. For several years, I worked with another researcher developing End-Point-Titration in a Florida allergy clinic. In my opinion, EPT is the only truly effective method of allergy/sensitivity cure therapy. During that time, (EEG biofeedback was not known to me then), I used this technique along with others to successfully treat ADD/ADHD in several children. However, this EPT therapy is usually very expensive, ranging up to $10,000 in expensive “doctor” time to diagnose and treat.
3, Nutritional treatments. Many “cures” have been seen by taking some allergens out of the diet, supplying enzymes and probiotics to diets, etc. This might be considered as an addition to the allergy treatments above.
4. EEG Biofeedback training. Starting in the 70’s, more and more clinicians have found that training to raise the SMR brain wave while controlling or lowering Theta works to alleviate or remove those symptoms of attention and concentration deficit, impulsive and hyperactive behavior, autism, epilepsy, and even depression and schizophrenia symptoms. The same drawback of very high cost is here as well, as this training in a clinic also requires hours and hours of expensive clinic/doctor time. Typical costs for 60 half-hour-training sessions for ADD/ADHD/autism run from $3000 to $10,000. Leasing from BHT Inc can cut this cost to under $450 in most cases.
5. Passive Auditory brainwave Training. Since April 2004, Dr Bate has conducted successful experiments in substituting passive auditory messaging for the expensive EEG biofeedback (and computer). The success rate is very comparable to that of EEG biofeedback (above). In the experiments Dr Bate found that this “Brain Training” might take as long as two to three months, but this is also the case with EEG biofeedback (Neurofeedback). There’s no such thing as an instant “cure” with either. Both take some time as they are both actually changing the amplitude of brain waves.
EEG Biofeedback (AKA neurofeedback) has been in use since the 1970s. It is completely safe (so safe that no state in the US evens requires a license). Many research and personal reports show that well over 500,000 diagnosed ADD/ADHD persons have been “trained” out of these brain disorders with it. These kids sit quietly in class and learn, and in most cases, their measured IQ goes up.
The data from dozens of clinicians, and thousands of ADD/ADHD subject’s shows with 40 half-hour sessions, approximately 50% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose all the “brain problem” symptoms. With 60 half-hour sessions, or 60 nights of auditory brainwave Training, approximately 85% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose most or all of these “brain problem” symptoms. “Success” in this training is considered to be the trainee sitting still in class, paying attention, learning easily, doing assigned homework in the time allotted, and in many cases, an increase in tested IQ. Needless to say, getting off all dangerous drugs is also an important criterion.
What about the “other” 15%? Well, remember that ADD/ADHD is NOT a disease. It’s more like a broad “continuum” ranging from the boy who eats candy at lunch, and is hyper for the afternoon all the way up to non-communicating autism. Also remember that diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, and Autism is more art than science, and is done more for insurance than for therapy. Diagnosis and separation of ADD-Autism symptoms is a “guess” at best, and different doctors misdiagnose many children.
Another very important success factor is “motivation” of the trainee. Some clinicians are not as good at this as others. This also applies to parents and teachers. The advantage of the Bate Auditory Training system is that no motivation is required. Just let it run 24/7.
Each child is an individual, and different in many ways. Those children that are closer on the continuum to Autism are the ones that mostly compose this 15%. These children take more sessions (up to 200 in one case reported by Dr Von Hilsheimer, an internationally recognized clinical expert), but even these more serious cases are trainable with EEG biofeedback or Bate Auditory Training. Since the cost is always a factor, the first choice should be the BAT system, as it is a small fraction of the other costs

As homeschool parents, there are many options for teaching our children. I have found the variety out there to actually be overwhelming, but few resources actually meet my needs. My son is gifted, but has ADHD. As a clinician and a professor, I hated seeing him struggle in school. Each day he would tell me he had “Carnitors” (T-Rex’s for the rest of us) in his tummy. After meeting with his teacher several times, it became clear that the school was unable/unwilling to meet his needs to my satisfaction. Kids with ADD/ADHD need a place with few distractions, short bursts of learning followed by physical activity, structure and learning materials tailored to how they learn and learning times scheduled around when they learn best.

After spending several months and several hours each day creating his lessons piece-meal, I found a couple of wonderful resources. The first is AOL at school: http://www.aolatschool.com. There is an amazing amount of information, links to complete online textbooks and more. This is where I go when he finds a topic of interest and he wants to know more. (Remember when we had to get our parents to take us to the library?) One of the benefits here is that it is FREE! The textbooks range from kindergarten all the way through high school and cover most topics.

The second resource I found serves as the foundation for our homeschooling curriculum: http://www.time4learning.com. Time4Learning provides a multimedia, interactive experience for kids covering all basic subject areas. For children with ADD/ADHD, you can break it down into snippets of 10 minute lessons. Additionally, many of the lessons combine subjects. That is, the “Language Arts” lessons are often on topics of health, science and history. This helps ease my mind considerably, because I can know he is learning educational material when he reads. (Many of the so called reading books from his public school were no more than See Spot Run). The other advantage with Time4Learning is that they set your child up at his/her grade level.

As I said, despite the ADHD, my son is gifted. He is set up to do 2nd grade work (he is in first grade), but he can progress as fast as he can and still master the material, or he can have easy/review days and do grade-level work. For parents, you can create an assignment book that links Time4Learning assignments to the skills they were supposed to learn. I use this to record his grades for the school board to review each year. I have found customer service to be very receptive to suggestions, they are regularly adding new features and their customer support is prompt and courteous.

A third resource is http://www.education-world.com/. This site has TONS of ideas, printable worksheets and activities. Since kids with ADD/ADHD have difficulty switching tasks, it is often preferable to have one “subject” per day and present it in a variety of formats (reading about it, watching a movie about it, applying it).

Other resources include:

Discovery School: http://school.discovery.com/

ABC Teach: http://www.abcteach.com/

FunBrain: http://www.funbrain.com/

SuperKids: http://www.superkids.com/

Everything4Kids: http://www.kapili.com/topiclist.html (This is geared to the older or advanced student)

KidsKnowIt: http://www.kidsknowit.com/

These last resources do not have a syllabus or curriculum, but they are FUN. For the child with ADD/ADHD this is especially important. Some days they are too stressed, tired or focused on something else to concentrate on “the basics.” As long as this does not happen too often, it is fine to let your child do an off-topic educational activity that he or she is interested in. In our house it is usually wildlife (http://www.enature.com), dinosaurs(KidsKnowIt) or space (NASA).

One suggestion is to set kid’s profiles up with icons on their desktops to only the 5-10 sites they are supposed to go to. My children will often stay on the coputer for hours if they can. Children with ADD get overwhelmed if they have too many choices and things to look at. This helps limit their distractions.

Sean went from a child who would look at a page in a book and say “Far too many words” to a child who reads to me and asks “Was I reading fluently Mommy?” I have gotten the time back in my day to start working part-time again. Between these all of these resources most any child and/or homeschool family can find what they are looking for.

Nowadays inattentive behavior can occur in children with depression and anxiety disorders due to an inappropriate level of inattention. Neurofeedback is a therapy technique that presents the user with real time feedback on brainwave activity as measured by sensors on the scalp and also gives the positive ways to respond to stress factors conveniently by making changes in diet, behavior and meditation.
In other words, Nerofeedback is the treatment that gives the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to the patient.

We all know that the human brain is adaptable and capable of improving its own performance according to the given cues. And electrical brain waves are altered when damaged by repeated drug and alcohol abuse. But you can take Nerofeedback as a learning technique that improves the function of your brain by receiving information about its own brain waves. It also enhances the communication network of your brain in a painless and noninvasive way.

AS Nerofeedback has different names including Neurotherapy, Neurobiofeedback or EEG biofeedback (EEGBF) it also beneficial for different kinds of problems related to your brain including AAD/ADHD, migraines, sleep disturbance, long-term reactions to trauma, anxiety, depression, and general mental slowing – problems with thinking and memory along with the Seizures and headache. Those who are suffering from the certain problems can rely on Nerofeedback because of effectiveness of this treatment.

The identification and treatment of children with ADHD is essential in preventing or at least minimizing the serious complications associated with the disorder. The improvement is measured and validated by improvement in the results listed above and are measured by independent observers and testing, reports by teachers, parents, and other involved health care professionals. Moreover, unlike medication, the training appears to produce permanent alterations in learning and behavior.

Neurofeedback treatment is designed to train individuals to increase the production of brainwave patterns that reduce or eliminate this cortical slowing, and thereby reducing or eliminating ADHD symptoms. It also helps a large number of those patients who complete treatment have a reduction or resolution of ADD/ADHD symptoms and no longer require medication. It unlike the commonly prescribed stimulants has no negative physical side effects.

Smartbraintech deals in Neurofeedback, Biofeedback, eeg biofeedback and many more.

Traditionally stimulant medications are the drug of choice prescribed by doctors in order to treat the various symptoms of ADHD. However, these medications often only provide temporary relief and have to be taken for long periods. Besides that, they can also have certain detrimental side effects. Because of this, many people are tempted to seek out relief through the alternative medicines. Alternative medicines ADHD treatment options can be varied. Here are some of the options available to those seeking Alternative medicines for ADHD:

Homeopathic remedies – these alternative medicines for ADHD actually come in the form of various remedies formulated by practitioners based on the symptoms the patient is exhibiting. As with many ailments, each person with ADHD experiences a slightly different set of symptoms.

A homeopathic practitioner will take a detailed medical history and prepares a remedy made up of a combination of various substances chosen specifically for their potency in relieving a specific set of symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies are aimed at treating the whole person, and the underlying causes of the condition and not just the symptoms. They claim to be more effective than conventional medications since they aim to rebalance the body, which in turn relieves symptoms.

2) Herbal stimulants – many people are going back to natures own medicine cabinet and are turning to different herbal stimulants for ADHD relief.

Prescription drugs like Ritalin are actually stimulants designed to help balance the chemical reactions in the brain in people with ADHD. However, since these drugs can have some adverse effects there has been a growing trend towards herbal stimulants.

These alternatives for ADHD have been shown to provide help in reducing ADHD behaviors, with a lower risk of side effects. Caution should be taken, however, as herbal stimulants can interact with conventional medication. Before taking any herbal stimulants, you should consult an expert to see whether or not it can be taken with any regular medication.

3) Nutritional supplements – these alternative medicines for ADHD are used to keep a person’s body and mind healthy. A certain level of nutritional intake is essential to maintain certain chemical processes in a person’s body and brain. Although our body does produce may substances it needs for clear and organized thought, certain substances can only be found in the food that we eat. If we don’t get enough through diet then supplementation may be required to help ease ADHD symptoms

4) Neurofeedback – this therapy isn’t really alternative medicines for ADHD. However, it has been devised to help individuals learn to recognize behaviors and adjust them accordingly. Neurofeedback claims to be able to train people to actually control their brain wave patterns. Certain brain wave patterns are associated with common symptoms of ADHD like daydreaming and inattention. By learning how to recognize and control brain wave patterns, people can maintain concentration and actually condition themselves to ignore the symptoms of the disorder.

These are just some of the alternative medicines ADHD options available. If you would like to know more, then sign up for the free recognizing and treating ADHD newsletter below.

All the research over the past 40 years shows clearly that EEG biofeedback training (aka Neurofeedback or Neurotherapy training) is by far the most effective therapy for ADD/ADHD with a “cure” rate of 85% or greater.

However, at an average cost of $4000+ per ADHD child, the mid or low income family simply cannot afford this proven therapy.  Ritalin and other dangerous drugs has become the “standard treatment”.  None of these ever solve the basic problem, but they allow the teachers to control the classroom, and sedate the ADD/ADHD kids.  All such drugs have serious side effects.

Now a new therapy called Neuroliminal Training has also proved by extensive volunteer testing (four tests since 2004) that it does exactly the same thing as EEG BF, namely change brain wave(s) amplitude by what is called beneficial brainwashing.

Instead of going to a clinic costing from $75-$250 per half hour, sitting in front of a computer screen with electrodes attached to the head about 50-60 times, Neuroliminal Training uses a subliminal messaging CD that is played all night every night for a few months.  (Many like it so much for good sleep that they continue playing the CD.)

In a test in 2006, 23 volunteers conducted an 8 week test, and all 23 improved just as would be expected using EEG BF.  In earlier tests in 2004 and 2005, similar results were seen.  The similiarities between the expensive EEG BF Training and the inexpensive Neuroliminal Training , especially in success rates are remarkable.

The inventor, and patent holder, Dr Phil Bate, is presently starting a new volunteer test.  He is accepting a limited number of volunteers with the following mental/physical problems:

Alzheimer’s
PTSD
OCD and anxiety
Schizophrenia
Depression

He will also accept a limited number of autism and epileptic cases for this test in order to obtain more data on both.  (A previous test showed success in symptom improvement for 9 autism and 2 epileptic cases).

Dr Bate is a retired orthomolecular psychologist who invented Neuroliminal Training, a better way to change brain wave amplitudes. neuroliminal adhd

As a non-medical treatment approach, behavior therapy ADHD treatment is a well-recognized therapy for children who have been diagnosed with ADHD. The process is also sometimes referred to as behavior management.

Although medications can manage the symptoms of ADHD, they may not be suitable for every child. For some children medication has little or no effect on behaviors, for others the side effects can be just as bad in different ways than the ADHD symptoms. Also for some children the medications may not address all the symptoms and others may just refuse to take it. This can sometimes happen in older children and teenagers.

Behavior therapy for ADHD aims to reduce ADHD behaviors by focusing on three main factors. Children, especially young children, generally want to please their parents and may change behaviors to gain parental approval. Behavior therapy can also work by using positive reward as a motivational tool and also by the avoidance of negative consequences (punishments).

So, the idea is to increase the emphasis on the child achieving parental approval with rewards for positive behavior and discouraging inappropriate behavior with consistent punishments.

Having a child with ADHD can be like living in a war zone with constant tension, arguments and fights due to the frustrations felt on all sides over ADHD behaviors. Parents are constantly having to nag, berate and cajole to get anything done and children get fed up always being in trouble and labeled as ‘bad’ or naughty. The relationship can quickly break down.

So going back to behavioral therapy and focusing on aiming to increase the child’s desire to please their parents there needs to be some time out from all this aggression where parent and child can enjoy an activity together. The best way to increase some goodwill between parent and child is for the child to choose an activity and then work with the parent to complete it. Parents need to ensure that they use motivational language and not try and take over or correct the child. This doesn’t have to go on for hours, about 30 – 40 minutes should to be enough.

By spending quality time together that’s fun, your child will start to enjoy Mom or Dad’s time and will hopefully become more willing to please.

The use of the positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool in behavior therapy. ADHD kids generally spend much of their time doing something they shouldn’t and getting reprimanded for their actions. It’s not very often that they get told they’ve done something right. It is generally much easier to criticize than to praise but if you make the effort to thank them or compliment on the behaviors you want to see more of the likelihood is that they’ll be repeated.

As well as verbal rewards you can also use other rewards. For example: for every good behavior your child earns a point that they can then accumulate for either a toy or a special treat of some kind. Try to avoid food treats though as these can encourage bad eating habits.

Negative consequences work in a similar way. Once you have explained to your child what is expected in a certain situation and they have understood you can use predetermined punishments if their behavior is not acceptable.

By punishments I don’t mean physically hitting your child, rather the removal of some privileges. In order for this approach to truly be effective you must be consistent or your child will soon realize that there is a difference between what you say and what you do.

For more natural treatments for ADHD sign up for the free newsletter below.

For behavior therapy treatments to work parents must be very clear about what their expectations are for their child’s behavior. The children need to understand both the actions they are expected to do and also the consequences for not carrying out those actions. Parents must be consistent with both reward and punishments and take care not to over react to situations.

If you are interested in designing a behavior therapy ADHD plan for your child then speak to your doctor who should be able to give you a referral to a qualified professional.

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com ADHD is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children with ADHD might have trouble paying attention. They might not seem to listen. They might forget things. They might not be able to stay seated or play quietly. They might talk too much. And they might act and speak without thinking about the results of their behavior. These are among the signs listed on the Web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States.Doctors usually identify ADHD in children. But experts say the behaviors often last into adulthood. Researchers have been looking for the cause or causes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Now, a brain-imaging study offers more evidence that could lead to new ways to treat it. Researchers say they observed shortages in the brain’s reward system in patients with ADHD The study found that levels of certain proteins were lower than normal. Nora Volkow is director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the lead author of the study. She says the lack of attention and self-control that mark ADHD could be caused by problems in the flow of dopamine. She said “Dopamine is considered a neurotransmitter that is crucial for our ability to perceive rewards and to be motivated in our behavior.” If people cannot sense a reward, she says, then they might have difficulty completing an activity. Researchers compared the pathways that transmit dopamine in fifty
